The Memorial Sea-Hawks (6-2-0) were able to wrap up their weekend with a 1-0 victory over the visiting UNB Reds (1-5-2), a great weekend for the home side who were able to win both of their games at King George V Park.
In a game where everything was heavily contested in the defensive zone, every potential scoring chance was so crucial as those were few and far between. Early in the game the Sea-Hawks were able to capitalize on their first scoring chance of the game on a tremendous through ball by Kate Hickey to Holly O'Neill (5G), who displayed great patience to find the back of the net in the 6th minute. Both teams struggled to establish consistent possession in the offensive zones and that was the main reason for the score line. The Sea-Hawks would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The UNB Reds controlled the play for the majority of the second half while the Sea-Hawks clung to their 1-0 lead, while possession was carried by the Reds they had trouble creating any significant chances due to the Sea-Hawks stout defence. Reds midfielder Jesse Bellamy was creating the majority of the chances for her side, credited with a team high 2 shots on goal. Credit needs to be given to the Sea-Hawks defenders, Spencer Wilkins, Jamie King, Christina Woloszcuk and Briana Pender were able to shut down any forward progress by the Reds attackers. Defence is usually an aspect of the game that is underrated by many, but the way both the Sea-Hawks and Reds defended today shows just how important a solid defensive play is.
The Reds outshot the Sea-Hawks by a count of 8-4, Sea-Hawks goalkeeper Sydney Walsh was perfect, stopping all 8 shots and walking away with the clean sheet. Reds goalkeeper Brynn Nash looked solid between the pipes, conceding 1 goal on 4 shots.
The Player of the game for today's match was Sea-Hawks midfielder Bethany Hynes, she was able to use her smarts at midfield to control the pace of the game and stifle any attacks by the Reds.
