The Memorial University Seahawks women's basketball program is proud to announce the
commitment of local guard Nyah Ryan for the 2026-2027 season.
Ryan, a 5'9 combo guard from Paradise, is one of Newfoundland and Labrador's top young
prospects, and is coming off an outstanding performance at the 2025 Canada Games, where she
averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. She showcased elite efficiency
throughout the tournament, shooting 42% from the field and an impressive 50% from three-
point range.
For Ryan, joining the Seahawks represents the fulfillment of a dream years in the making.
"I have been watching the women's Seahawks basketball games with my family since I was 8
years old. It was also around this time that my dad started taking me to the MUN Field House
weekly to practice my shooting. After these shooting sessions, I would leave the Field House
dreaming of one day playing basketball with the Seahawks. Having had the chance to be around
the women's program for the last few years, the connection I felt with the coach and the girls
made Memorial an easy choice for me. I am very excited to be able to play at home in front of my
family and friends."
Seahawks head coach Mark English expressed his excitement about officially welcoming Ryan
to the program.
"We are thrilled to have Nyah commit to our program. I've had the opportunity to watch Nyah's
development over the last three years, and it has been impressive to see her growth as a
basketball player. She had a great showing this past summer at the Canada Games and we are
excited about Nyah's ability to shoot the basketball and make big shots in pressure situations.
Nyah is super versatile offensively as she can play the point guard position as well. We are eager
to get to work with her and help her continue to develop and take her game to an even higher
level."
Ryan is also excited to grow and develop her game next year and believes her style of play fits
well with the Seahawks.
"I am very excited to grow and develop as a player in my first season. I am also looking forward
to playing at the U SPORTS level and getting to know my teammates. As a point guard/shooting
guard I think my speed and 3-point shooting ability are some of my main strengths that will help
me contribute to the team and match their style of play."
Ryan's commitment marks a significant addition to a Seahawks roster focused on continued
growth, local development, and building a strong future within the AUS conference.
The Seahawks are currently 3-5 and in 5 th place in the AUS. They are on the road this weekend
for a double header against UPEI to finish out the first half of the regular season.
