St. John's, NL – Memorial University Men's Basketball Head Coach Ian Coultas is pleased to announce the addition of Javian Downey, a 6'2" point guard transferring from Missouri State University–West Plains.
Downey brings a high level of experience and maturity to the Sea-Hawks roster, having competed in the NJCAA system and proven himself as a high-IQ floor general. Known for his scoring ability and leadership, Javian is expected to make an immediate impact in Memorial's backcourt rotation.
Originally from Canada, Downey has earned a number of individual accolades throughout his career, including two First Team All-Catholic Tournament selections, a Heinbuch Tournament First Team All-Star, and awards recognizing his leadership and academic excellence, including the First Generation Student Award and two Chancellor's List selections (awarded for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher).
He plans to continue his academic journey in the Business program at Memorial and is eager to make his mark at the U SPORTS level. "I'm looking forward to playing against high-level competition every night," said Downey.
When asked what led him to choose Memorial, Downey emphasized the connection he felt with the coaching staff and campus environment. "The instant relationship and bond I built with Coach Ian and his staff—and the amazing campus and facilities Memorial has to offer—made this decision an easy one."
Sea-Hawks fans can expect a competitive and exciting player. "I'm a fast-paced point guard who can score at all three levels, get my teammates involved, and just be an overall competitor and winner!" he said.
Coach Coultas shared his excitement about bringing Downey into the program: "Javian's experience, maturity, and winning mentality are exactly what we're looking for. He's been through the grind at the junior college level, and I know he's hungry to prove himself in U SPORTS. We're thrilled to have him."
The Sea-Hawks are excited to welcome Javian to St. John's as the program continues to build for a championship run.
