Saturday, February 6th, 2016: Tigers edge Sea-Hawks fueled by hot start
(St. John's, NL) The Dalhousie Tigers topped the Memorial Sea-Hawks by a score of 83-78 in AUS Men's Basketball action on Saturday night at The Field House.
Dalhousie got off to a quick start, as they opened the game on a 14-2 run. Sven Stammberger, who dropped 10 points in the opening frame, led the Tigers, while Ritchie Kanza Mata chipped in with 7 of his own. Dalhousie finished the first up 29-17.
Memorial regrouped after the first quarter and chipped away at the Dalhousie lead behind some great outside shooting from Daniel Gordon. Gordon was 2 for 2 from long range and finished with 8 points in the frame. The Tigers made a late run to go into half with an 11-point margin.
The Sea-Hawks made a push in the second half, outscoring Dalhousie by four points in the third quarter and two in the final frame. However it wasn't enough to upset the defending AUS champions, who held onto their lead, taking the game by 5 points with a final score of 83-78.
Curcic led the Sea-Hawks with 23 points and 3 assists. Gould was arguably the Sea-Hawks best player tonight, as he finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Ritchie Kanza Mata had a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sven Stammberger finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Jarred Reid played a strong game off the bench for the Tigers, as he finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds.
Sunday, February 7th, 2016: Sea-Hawks stay in the playoff hunt with big win
(St. John's, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks kept their playoff hopes alive with a win over the first-place Dalhousie Tigers on Sunday afternoon at The Field House.
Memorial was able to get out to a better start today, as they took the first quarter by a score of 21-14. Caleb Gould led the way for Memorial with 8 points in the opening frame, while six other Sea-Hawks registered points to help give them the lead.
Dalhousie was able to refocus after the first and relied on their defense to get them back into the game. The Tigers held the Sea-Hawks to just 9 points in the second quarter and were able to go into the half with a 32-30 advantage.
In the third, Memorial took back the lead, as Noel Moffatt scored 11 points and registered 2 steals in just five minutes of play. Memorial would go into the final frame up 6 points and would be able to hold onto that led, despite a gritty effort by the visiting Tigers.
It took a balanced attacked for the Sea-Hawks to get by the first-place Tigers, as four players scored in double figured. Vasilije Curcic led the way with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Caleb Gould was right behind with 14 points and 3 rebounds. Noel Moffatt provided 13 points off the bench and also pulled down 6 rebounds.
The Tigers got contributions up and down the line-up. Sven Stammberger scored 15 points, hauled down 8 rebounds, and also had 3 assists, and 2 steals in a losing effort. Jordan Aquino-Serjue and Kashrell Lawrence both scored 11 points, while combining for 9 rebounds.
The Sea-Hawks are on the road to take on the UPEI Panthers, in an eight-point weekend, while Dalhousie returns home to face the Cape Breton Capers.
