Sea-Hawks wrap up regular season at UNB

(Feb. 22, 2015) The Memorial basketball teams finished up the regular season in Fredericton on Friday and Saturday in games against the UNB Varsity Reds. 

The women's team swept the weekend to finish up the season on a winning note over the Varsity Reds. The Sea-Hawks will face the fourth ranked Cape Breton Capers in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs at 6pm on Thursday, February 26th.  

The men were bested by the first ranked V-Reds in both games of the weekend series. The 2015 AUS championship bracket has been set and Memorial will face the third ranked Saint Mary's Huskies in the 8:15pm quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 27th.

(FREDERICTON, N.B.) The UNB Varsity Reds men's basketball team bested the Memorial Sea-Hawks 85-66 in their second last game of the AUS regular season, in front of a crowd of 750 people at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER. 

The first-place ranked UNB Varsity Reds began the game with a burst of energy. UNB took the first six points with some hard-earned steals and turnovers created by CIS leading scorer Javon Masters (Kitchener, ON) and Matt Daley (Belledune, NB). 

The Sea-Hawks answered back and narrowed UNB's lead to trail closely throughout the first and second quarter with close scores of 20-15 and 37-33 respectively. 

The Varsity Reds finished the third quarter leading MUN 58-52 on the strength of UNB's Will McFee (Northbridge, Australia), with 13 points in the third quarter alone. 

UNB finished off the game with a strong fourth quarter, winning the game by 19 points. 

Memorial's Noel Moffat (St.John's, NL) was strong for the Sea-Hawks, posting 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Subway Player of the Game was awarded to UNB's McFee, who played with great energy and scored 25 points. 

The Varsity Reds play next when they host the Sea-Hawks tomorrow, Saturday, February 21, at 2pm.

Saturday: UNB finishes first in AUS for first time since 1967 with 97-79 win over MUN

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds men's basketball team clinched a first place finish in regular season action this afternoon after defeating Memorial University 97-79. This is UNB's first time finishing first in the AUS since 1967.

This afternoon's game was a team effort with several of players contributing to the V-Reds' winning effort. Matt Daley (Belledune, NB) had 13 points and seven rebounds and Will McFee (Northbridge, Australia) put up a huge 25 points. 

UNB started off a little slow, with Memorial leading 17-15 in the first quarter. But as the game progressed, the Varsity Reds picked up the momentum and showed why they are first in the AUS today. 

"Coming down the stretch we really played well and executed as a team" said UNB's Javon Masters (Kitchener, ON) who is currently leading the CIS in points and tallied an impressive 26 points in today's game. 

McFee also contributed the win and overall success of the team this season as a whole. 

"We were firing on all cylinders," McFee said. "I think the best thing about this team is that anyone can step up on any night." 

Subway Player of the Game was awarded to one of UNB's graduating players Ryan Smith (Dalhousie, NB) with ten points and nine rebounds. 

Leading the charge for Memorial was Davion Parnsalu (Ajax, ON) with 20 points. Jeremy Hickey (Chapels Cove, NL) was strong as well, with 15 points and six rebounds. 

UNB plays next in the semi-final game at the AUS championships on Saturday, February 28, at 6pm at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, NS.
