WEEKEND PREVIEW
Men's Basketball
The Sea-Hawks (6-12) will visit the UNB Varsity Reds (14-4) for a pair of four point games in AUS men's basketball action this weekend. This marks the final weekend of the regular season for the team before heading to the Subway AUS Championships in Halifax. With a series split at home against Acadia last weekend, the Sea-Hawks locked up sixth place in the conference and assured themselves a place in the 8:15pm quarterfinal next Friday evening.
The games will have no effect on the team's playoff seeding, but Coach Peter Benoite is expecting his team to have a strong weekend as they look to enter the single elimination playoffs on a high note. Sea-Hawks forwards Vasilije Curcic and Caleb Gould currently rank third and fourth in conference scoring with 21.7 and 18.9 points per game, respectively, and should prove vital to Memorial's attack against the first place Varsity Reds. St. John's native Noel Moffat has been another important player for the team this season, sitting fourth in the conference in rebounds with 8.8 per game.
UNB guard Javon Masters has proven to be one of the best players in the conference this season, and Memorial must try to contain him to have a chance at winning this weekend. He currently ranks first in the AUS with 25.3 points per game and third in assists with 88 over 18 games this season (4.9 APG). Masters is well-known for his ability to cut through the key and make shots near the rim, so look for the Sea-Hawks frontline of Curcic, Gould and Jeremy Hickey to step up defensively and make things difficult for him this weekend.
The games will be live on webcast at www.AUStv.ca. Tip off will be at 8 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
