Stjepanovic to Lead Sea-Hawks MBB Program

Memorial University has named Igor Stjepanovic as the new head coach of the Sea-Hawks varsity men's basketball team. With extensive coaching experience spanning almost every level of the Canadian game, he will look to build on a consistently competitive program that has qualified for the AUS playoffs for 9 consecutive seasons. A dedicated life-long learner, Coach Stjepanovic holds numerous University degrees, highlighted by a Master's in Leadership & Managment with a specialization in coaching from Western University.

On his newfound appointment, Igor said "I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead the Memorial University Sea-Hawks Men's Basketball program. I'm humbled by the responsibility, excited for the challenge ahead, and I can't wait to get to work. I want to thank my family, friends, mentors, and everyone who has supported me along the way. Simply put, this journey wouldn't have been possible without you. I truly hope the people of Newfoundland & Labrador and Memorial University are excited for what's to come. Together, we'll build something that our student-athletes, alumni, and community can be proud of. Let's go!"

Memorial's Director of Varsity Athletics Dr. Karen Muprhy said "I am excited to welcome Coach Stjepanovic to Memorial. Igor brings an infectious passion and energy to the game, with varied experience across U Sports, CEBL, and player development coaching. He is a skilled recruiter, identifying and developing winning talent. His commitment to student-athlete centred sport is a fit with our values at Memorial Athletics, and we look forward to the leadership he brings to our program"

Most recently, the Windsor, Ontario native has served as the lead assistant coach of the Acadia men's basketball team. During his three seasons in the Annapolis Valley, Stjepanovic played a key role in transforming the Axemen program from the bottom of the AUS standings to the very top of the podium, capturing the 2025–26 AUS Championship.

Prior to landing on the east coast, Stjepanovic gained valuable assistant coach experience with his hometown Windsor Lancers, and the Western Mustangs. He also spent three years as coaching staff member of the CEBL's Hamilton Honey Badgers franchise, culminating with a league championship in 2022. Stjepanovic will complete his summer duties as a provincial team head coach with Basketball Nova Scotia before relocating to St. John's in the coming weeks.

Memorial will open it 2026-27 AUS campaign on the road at the University of New Brunswick on Friday, October 23rd. The home opener is set for Friday, November 6th when the Sea-Hawks host the UPEI Panthers at Memorial's Field House.
