Season Preview
This year the Memorial Sea~Hawks women’s volleyball team
will have a different look from last year’s team that
finished 6th in the AUS and just narrowly missed a trip to the post
season. With one of the smallest teams in the league, the Sea~Hawks
will need to bring their best to the court every match if they hope
to get back into the playoffs.
The biggest change this year for Memorial will be at the helm, as
former Memorial standout Terry Mosher will take over the reigns of
the women’s program. Mosher brings a great deal of experience
to the program, having coached Canada Games three times (2009,
2001, & 1976). Joining Mosher as assistants will be former
Sea~Hawk and 2009 women’s Canada Games coach Megan Conroy,
and Stewart MacPherson in his third year with the team.
With a young squad, the women will be looking to their fourth year
players for their leadership. Libero Nicole Jolliffe, middle Sarah
Strickland, and 2008-09 AUS second team All-Star Sasha Wilkins,
will make up the core of the team this season. Last year Wilkins
lead the AUS in service aces, was 3rd in kills, and 4th in digs,
all numbers she will need to keep up if the Sea~Hawks want another
crack at the playoffs.
Much like the men’s team, many of the women’s
volleyball players had a long summer on the court training for
Canada Games. Eight players from this summer’s Newfoundland
and Labrador team are looking for a place on the Sea~Hawks roster.
Sophomores Erin Bursey, Julia Watts, Adrienne Penney, and Angela
Peddle are all back with the ‘Hawks and will be counted on to
contribute more this season.
Third year setter Beth Forsey is also coming off success at the
Canada Games and will aim to improve upon a 6th in the AUS placing
in assists. Joining the veterans from Canada Games are rookies Sara
Avery, Kerrie Lynn Strickland, and Alicia Matthews. Also competing
for one of the twelve roster spots this season are rookies Megan
Dawe, Kerrie Mattie, and Caitlin O’Grady. Rounding out the
group of fifteen is Jessica Crocker, who the Sea~Hawks are
welcoming back after taking time off due to school commitments.
The women will see their first action on the court when they travel
to the Université de Moncton for an Interlock tournament
involving teams from the AUS and Quebec. The Sea~Hawks make their
home debut when they host the Cape Breton Capers on November 20th
and 21st.
