Season Preview

This year’s Memorial Sea~Hawks women’s swim team will look to build upon last year’s successes, while making some history of their own. The 2008-09 Sea~Hawks finished a strong season in second place overall at the AUS Championships and just narrowly missed sending multiple swimmers to the CIS Championships, something Memorial has been unable to accomplish in four seasons. Coach Brad Hutton says this year’s team goal is simple, the Sea~Hawks aim to send a female relay team to the CIS Championships meet for the first time in Memorial swimming history.

The Sea~Hawks will rely on a fairly young team to accomplish their goal this season and will look to Canada Games swimmers to make the biggest splash. Kelsie Rogers is coming off a fantastic meet at Canada Games where she raced sub CIS Championship qualifying times in relays, as well as improving in all individual events. Joining Rogers in their second seasons as Sea~Hawks will be Dayna Hogan, who competed strong in both distance and the IM events at the Games, as well as Leah Tomblin who has been steadily improving in both the butterfly and freestyle events, in addition to an already strong backstroke. Also making their sophomore debuts are Kelsey Alexander, who narrowly missed the CIS Championships last year in the sprint butterfly events, and Erin Daly, who is expected to move up the rankings in breaststroke and closer to the CIS Championships.

The ‘Hawks will also be welcoming back two third year swimmers in Jane Brodie, and Monica MacGillivray. Brodie has been a solid performer at the AUS Championships in the breaststroke and freestyle events, but will look to take this even further this year. MacGillvray will be back looking for personal bests in freestyle and individual medley events.

In addition to these veteran swimmers the Sea~Hawks will be adding rookies Kelsey Flynn, who raced to best times at this summer’s Canada Games, and Erica Noonan, who also competed at the Canada Games in the SWAD events. Noonan won three silver medals at the games, half of Newfoundland’s total medal count! Noonan will spend the year training with the Sea~Hawks while preparing to qualify for the Para-World Championships in 2010.
