Season Preview

After a very disappointing and winless 2008-2009 season, the Sea~Hawks men’s volleyball team will look to get back on the right track by building a solid foundation to support their program in the future. With a young team, the Sea~Hawks will have their work cut out for them in an extremely competitive Atlantic University Sport (AUS) league.

Returning for his third season as head coach of the Sea~Hawks will be Luke Harris. Harris coached a successful Newfoundland & Labrador Canada Games team to their best finish ever this summer, and will hope to carry on this success with the ‘Hawks this season. Joining Harris in his second season as an assistant coach will be former Sea~Hawk Nick Higgins.

This year’s Sea~Hawks squad will again be an extremely young team, with their oldest returning player being third year team captain Alex Barrett. Barrett will be making the transition from the setting position to the left side this year, a position he was able to work on while playing Canada Games during the summer. Although young, the Sea~Hawks have plenty of experienced players including a total of seven from this summer’s successful Canada Games team. Joining Barrett from the Canada Games group are second year setter Brad Pitcher who will take over the starting position, second year left side Andrew Stephens, and rookies Brad Jolliffe, Josh Ennis, and Nathan Tilley. Also returning from Canada Games will be last year’s AUS rookie of the year Scott Hickman. Hickman will be called upon to dominate from the middle again this year, and if he can remain healthy look for Scott to improve upon his 0.93 blocks per game last season, which was good enough for second in the league.

Notably absent from the ‘Hawks line-up this year will be 2007-2008 AUS Rookie of the year, and the 2008-2009 AUS Libero of the year, Paul Easton. Easton will sit the year out due to school commitments, but ready to take his spot on the floor are second year Jamie Gillingham, and rookie Brad Jolliffe who was forced to redshirt much of last season due to injury. Rounding out the team will be second years Jesse Simms who represented Newfoundland at this summer’s Canada Games in beach volleyball, and Anatol Silotch. Along with Jolliffe, Tilley, and Ennis, rookies Jon Howell and Chris Day will be making their debut in the red and white this season.

We will get our first look at the new Sea~Hawks team on Saturday, October 31st, when they make their season debut at home when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in a weekend series of matches at the Field House.
