(St. John's, NL) – The UNB Varsity Reds completed a weekend sweep of the Memorial Sea-Hawks with a 60-56 victory on Sunday afternoon at The Field House.
UNB jumped out to an early lead on the Sea-Hawks and finished the quarter up 13 to 7. The Varsity Reds were led by Nicole LaFleur who finished the first quarter with a team high 6 points, while Katelyn Mangold chipped in with 5 points.
The Varsity Reds would continue to build on their lead into the second quarter and would go into the half with a 27 to 14 advantage.
Memorial responded well to start the second half with Sydney Stewart (Sarnia, ON) leading the way with 9 points in the quarter to go along with 2 assists and 2 steals.
The Sea-Hawks would use the third quarter surge to cut the Varsity Reds lead to 8 points going into the final quarter of play.
The final quarter of play was very competitive and the Sea-Hawks were able to get within 2 points of the Varsity Reds, but UNB were able to get key baskets from multiple players down the stretch to keep them ahead.
Nicole LaFleur finished with a game high 19 points and added 4 rebounds. Katelyn Mangold also registered a strong performance for UNB as she finished with 9 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
Memorial travels to Antigonish, NS next weekend to take on the StFX X-Women for a two-game set.
