(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds downed the Memorial Sea-Hawks 3-1 in men's volleyball action Saturday night, at Richard J. Currie Center.
The VReds won the first two sets 25-8 and 26-24. The Sea-Hawks took the third set 25-19, before UNB edged Memorial 25-22 in the fourth.
With the win, UNB improved to 5-6. The loss dropped Memorial to 0-11.
Elvind Andersen(Sandnes, NOR) was named Subway Player of the Game, after recording 18 kills and 13 digs for UNB.
Tristen Burridge(Fort St. John, BC) added 13 kills and nine digs, while Kent Doucette(Tignish, PE) contributed 36 assists and 11 digs for the VReds.
"I guess we found a way to win," said UNB head coach Dan McMorran. "We came out and played our most efficient ball of the season in the first set, then let our foot off the gas and dug a hole to start the second."
"When we were up two games to one, I thought we should have been down two sets to one," he said.
UNB cruised to an early 4-0 lead in the opening set before going on two four-point runs later on.
The second set started the other way around, and Memorial kept nipping at UNB's heels to keep the Varsity Reds from dominating the whole match.
Most of the third set was back-and-forth, but a late five-point run for the Sea-Hawks put them over the top.
The fourth set provided more of the same, although the VReds enjoyed their own four point run near the end that helped get them back in the game and eventually win it.
"In order to win games against a team like the VReds, you have to play all the way from zero to 25 and beyond," said Memorial head coach Cisco Farrero. "We found just enough breaks to not win the match."
Saturday's match was the first of two between UNB and Memorial in as many days.
The second one goes Sunday. First serve is at 1:30pm Atlantic.
