The Saint Mary's Huskies beat the Memorial Sea-Hawks in their visit to the Nest this Sunday by a score of 72-63.
The Hawks took the floor with confidence, enjoying the benefits of a home gym. Kosta Tiodorovic had a great energy start for the Hawk, putting up a quick five points, three coming off an energetic and-one play. For SMU, they weren't hampered by their unfamiliarity with the gym, shooting confidently in the first half. They finished the first quarter on a great 9-0 run off three deep three-pointers. At the half, SMU led by two over the Hawks, 34-32. MUN ended the first half on a great 8-0 run to boost their momentum in to the second half of play.
Nathan Barker led the Hawks with 13 points in the first half, supported by Daniel Foo's 6. For SMU, scoring has been balanced. Nobody had scored more than 10 after the first half, but seven Husky players had scored. Nikita Ksongo had an uncharacteristically quiet first half, but he had provided some highlight plays with a lovely no-look pass to a dunk for his teammate, Qyemah Gibson. Gibson had 6 in the first half.
The third quarter was an incredible frame of basketball. Both teams were scrapping and clawing for any break in the close game, fighting to gain an advantage. Daniel Foo of the Hawks had 10 in the frame. The Huskies were able to continue their dispersed scoring efforts throughout the second half. Despite such a competitive third quarter, MUN could not maintain SMU's offense. They struggled to convert on their own opportunities, being forced to commit unfortunate turnovers.
In the fourth, the Huskies blew open their lead. They shot decently from deep, but they made Memorial pay from the foul line, capitalizing on each opportunity. MUN struggled in the final quarter, shooting a dismal 14% from the field.
The Sea-Hawks take on UPEI this coming weekend, at the Field House. They will look to rebound back from this competitive loss and emerge victorious. All Sea-Hawks games are available for live-stream at AUStv.ca
