The women’s basketball team will travel to British Columbia to play Simon Fraser, UBC and UVIC over the weekend.

Cross Country Running

The Memorial University cross country teams will be hosting the MUN Run 5k this Saturday morning at 8 a.m. as a fundraiser for Sea~Hawks cross country and Allied Health Services. The course will start and end at Pedagogue’s Close opposite the Aquarena on Westerland Road. The certified 5k course will involve two laps around the campus of Memorial. Start time is 8 a.m. Registration is $25 ($22 for students) and includes a Sea~Hawks dri-fit running hat.

The race is open to all levels of participation from serious runners to walkers. Registration is open until Friday 4 p.m. If you are interesting in registering please contact race director Shayne Menecola at 737-8682 or smenecola@mun.ca

Wrestling

Representatives from Memorial's varsity wrestling team will be in Montreal this weekend as they compete on the Concordia Open. Seeing their first action of the season are Matthew Kippenhuck (65kg), Adam Coady (65kg), Matt Hill (61kg), Justin Dunphy (72kg), Robert Zadra (76kg), Ryan Nichols (100kg), and Jon Smith (130kg). Coach Kerri Ann Evely hopes that the team will gain good experience at the meet.

Women’s Soccer

With only a little over three weeks left until the AUS Championship, Memorial’s women’s soccer team is running out of time to get their season on track. So far the 2009-10 season has been full of disappointment for the Sea~Hawks, but all that could change if the women can pick up two big wins this weekend. The women will travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick where they will meet the UNB Varsity Reds who currently sit tied with the Sea~Hawks for 9th in the AUS. Look for the Sea~Hawks to come alive offensively and get last year’s AUS leading scorer Laura Breen back in form against a UNB team with the worst goals against in the AUS. Sea~Hawks keeper Keira Eavis who has played well for the ‘Hawks all season will once again be called upon to lead the defense. Last year, the Sea~Hawks opened their season with two wins over the Reds, a result the team will hope to duplicate this weekend while picking up six points and getting right back into contention.

The Sea~Hawks will hit Chapman Field in New Brunswick with action beginning at 1pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Men’s Soccer

Memorial’s men’s soccer team will also play a two game series in Fredericton, New Brunswick this weekend against the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds. With the team currently only four points out a playoff spot, and six points on the line this weekend, it is now or never for the Sea~Hawks.
This weekend will not be easy as they take on a UNB team that is currently 4th in the AUS. The Reds climbed as high as an 8th place ranking in the CIS this season, but have struggled offensively, scoring only nine goals on the season thus far. Sea~Hawks’ keeper Tyler Putt will look for his first win of the season, while looking to avenge the team’s two losses at the hands of the Reds early last year. Watch for forwards Chris Bulger and Chris White who have both finally returned from injury to potentially provide the offensive spark the ‘Hawks have been looking for.

The Sea~Hawks will meet UNB on Saturday and Sunday at 3:15pm at Chapman Field in Fredericton.

Women’s Basketball

This weekend the Sea~Hawks women’s basketball team will be playing their toughest competition of the young season when they take a tour of three Canada West Universities.

On Friday afternoon the Sea~Hawks will start things off against the Simon Fraser University Clan. The Clan were ranked 1st in the CIS for the majority of the 2008-09 season, led by last year’s CIS Second Team All-Canadian Laurelle Weigl and Robyn Buna. The Sea~Hawks will need to play a tight defensive game against SFU’s offense that scored 107 points in last weekend’s defeat of Wilfred Laurier.

On Saturday the team will stay in Vancouver and take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Last weekend the Thunderbirds went 1-2 at an exhibition tournament in Toronto. They will be led by fourth year guard Devan Lisson. Memorial will need to keep focused on defense and need big games from their posts if they hope to take down a competitive UBC team.
The Sea~Hawks will finish off their weekend against the University of Victoria Vikes as part of the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament in Victoria, British Columbia. Both teams traded positions in the CIS rankings much of last season and both teams are coming off of winning weekends last week. The Vikes are led by 2008-09 CIS MVP Kayla Dykstra, who averaged 17 points a game last weekend in Regina.

The Sea~Hawks Canada West trip will be a good indicator of where Memorial fits on the national stage, and a great tune-up for when they open their AUS season in just over three weeks time.
