Basketball Teams at Home to Face Acadia, While Men's Volleyball and Swim Team Hit the Road

As many new year's resolutions are falling apart, Sea-Hawks teams in action this weekend must keep their eyes on the prize and not give their competitors any advantage. The swim team head to UPEI and will be looking to secure some CIS qualifying times and will be scouting out their Atlantic competition in advance of the AUS Championships scheduled for Dalhousie in February. Men's Volleyball heads to the new Currie Center at UNB for Interlock action and are searching for match wins against teams from Quebec. Sea-Hawks basketball teams take to the court at home, with the women seeking to earn valuable playoff points against a tough Acadia squad. Men's basketball will face an athletic Acadia team, but will look to home court advantage to give them an edge.

Women's Basketball

Jan 14 6pm vs Acadia

Jan 15 8 pm vs Acadia

The Sea-Hawks have hopefully closed the door on their trip to CBU that saw them give up a 19 point lead in a losing cause to CBU, followed by a sizeable loss on the next day to give the Capers an 8 point gain in standings. The Sea-Hawks veterans will have to rise to the challenge as Acadia will be returning to the Field House seeking revenge from a tight quarterfinal loss to the Sea-Hawks at last year's AUS Championship. Look for the Axewomen to play an up tempo game, with lots of full court pressure and aggressiveness on the defensive end. 2011 AUS 1st team allstar Emma Duinker will likely provide leadership and scoring on the Axewomen attack, while last year's rookie of the year Kristy Moore should also play a key role in this weekend's match-up. The Sea-Hawks need to shake off the loss from last weekend and bring their 'A' game against a talented Acadia team. The veterans will need to provide leadership as it's likely both games should be tightly contested match-ups.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team will try and recover from a disappointing weekend in Cape Breton, where the team lost both games to the Capers. Sunday's game ended in a 4 point loss, but it was little mistakes during the final couple of minutes of play that cost the Sea-Hawks a chance to win. If the team can put in a full 40 minute effort and do the little things, the opportunity to beat the Axemen at home is real. Jason Shepherd and Mike Helsby continue to be the backbone of the Sea-Hawks offense and will need a full team effort to contain and control an athletic Axemen squad.

Men's Volleyball

Jan 20 Memorial vs Montreal
Jan 21 Memorial vs Laval
Jan 21 Memorial vs Sherbrooke

The Men's Volleyball team heads to UNB to compete in an AUS-Quebec Interlock event and will open facing the Montreal Carabins. The Sea-Hawks beat Montreal in 4 sets at the November Interlock tournament hosted by Memorial, but throughout the match Montreal never gave up, so the Sea-Hawks will have to remain focused as they start the tournament. In their 2nd match up the Sea-Hawks will take on CIS ranked Laval and their goal will be to take set wins from the Rouge et Or. In their final match up, the Sea-Hawks will look to earn a match win over a Sherbrooke team that narrowly defeated the Sea-Hawks in November. Drew Stephens, Brad Pitcher, Alex Barrett, Brad Jolliffe and Nathan Tilley will all need to be on their game to allow the Sea-Hawks a shot at earning match wins at this tournament.

Swimming

The men's and women's swim team will head to UPEI this weekend to compete in an AUS invitational meet and the top swimmers will be focused on securing CIS qualifying times to take the pressure off heading into the AUS Championships. A number of the Memorial team members, joined the Legends swim club members in Barbados over the Christmas break for an intense training camp and head coach Brad Hutton is pleased with the progress and speed of his team members. The meet should be a good test of team training to date and a good precursor to medal potentials at the AUS Champs.
