Swimmers, basketball and runners in action this weekend
The Sea~Hawks swim team highlights the schedule this weekend as they host the Waterloo Warriors in CIS exhibition swimming at the Aquarena Saturday at 4:30 pm. The Sea~Hawks men's basketball team will also be on the court at the MUN Gym as they play host to a four-team exhibition tournament featuring three St. John's Molson Senior Division One teams. The Memorial cross-country team is also in action, travelling to Fredericton to participate in the UNB Invitational.
Dual in the Pool
The Memorial Sea~Hawks swim teams will be racing an exciting dual meet format as they host the University of Waterloo Warriors at the Aquarena on Saturday. The meet gets started at 4:30pm and will feature a home and away series with point accumulation across multiple events determining the winner. The Sea~Hawks will travel for the second portion of the dual meet in Waterloo on October 30.
The dual meet includes ten individual events and two relays. The top three finishers in each event and the top relay teams will earn points for their teams.
Head coach Brad Hutton has high expectations for the weekend. He said, "It will be fast racing early in the season as we push to touch the wall first in most events."
The men's team will be led by David Forbes, the winner of the Butler Trophy the last two season as Memorial University Athlete of the Year award. Forbes will be racing in the 50m butterfly, 50m freestlye, and the 200m freestyle.
Also racing for the men are Richard Hibbs, Ryan Allen, Adam Harvey, Brett Foster, Tim Bennett, Mason Jeddore and Matthew Avis. Seeing there fist action as Sea~Hawks this weekend are Brandon McKay and Matt Roberts.
On the women's side the team will be led by Kelsie Rogers, Leah Tomblin and Dayna Hogan. Erin Daly, Monica MacGillivray and Erica Noonan will also be racing while first years Nadine Rockwood, Miya Janes-Green, Emily Innes, Aileen McAleese and Emma Forbes will see their first action in the Memorial red.
Admission for the event is free and support from the community is greatly appreciated.
Men's Basketball Exhibition
Local fans will get their first look at the Memorial men's basketball team this weekend as they play host to a four-team tournament featuring teams from the St. John's Molson Division One league.
Games will take place at the MUN Gym with the Sea~Hawks first action being against head coach Peter Benoite's club team, Nova Physio. Game time is Friday night at 8:30pm.
The team will be led by Jason Shepherd, Mark Woodland and Robbie Habib. Other returning players include AUS all-rookie Mike Helsby, Matthew Cleary, Alex Harding, Justin Grainger, Jordan Constantine, and Steven Earles, who starts on the season on the shelf with a broken foot.
Fans will see many new faces in the Memorial lineup that will give them reason to get excited for the upcoming AUS season.
Talented newcomers Justin Alliman from Brampton and Will Bradbury from Waterloo give Memorial stability in the guard position that they have not seen in several years.
Other rookies looking to make an impression on Coach Benoite this weekend include local products Ryan Wood, Ryan Brockerville, Theo Stanoev, and Ciaran Curran. Joining the team from outside Newfoundland are Tyree Halee from Halifax and Marcus Dolliver from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
With head coach Peter Benoite and assistant Evan Constantine being members of the Nova Physio entry it will be interesting to see if either or both suit up against their team on Friday night. Former Sea~Hawk great Mike Woods is also a member of Nova Physio, as are Ante Samodol, Sean Thistle and Jon Rusted.
The other teams competing in the tournament are Bay Bulls Marine Co and the Rob Roy. Bay Bulls boasts a roster that includes former Sea~Hawks Christian Somerton and Manny Wilby. Former varsity athletes on the Rob Roy include Mark English, Grant Harvey, Jeremy Somerton, Curtis Power, and Justin Penney.
Bay Bulls and the Rob Roy will play on Friday at 6:30pm. The winners of the first games will play on Saturday at 6:30pm in the tournament final while the losers will play in the consolation final at 4:30pm. All games will be held in the MUN Gym.
Cross Country
The Sea~Hawks cross country teams will be off to Fredericton to compete in the UNB Invitational. The women's team will compete in the 5k distance starting at 10am Saturday while the men will compete in the 8k distance starting at 10:45am.
The women will send Victoria Ralph, Jessica Coffey, Jennifer Hulbert, Katie Little, and Laura Lawes. Hulbert returns to the competitive roster this weekend after battling an injury.
While the men will send Sean Hulbert, Matt Wakeham, Tyler Cole, Thomas Martin, Jordan Fracheville, and Adam Fitzgerald. Hulbert is Memorial's top runner and is returning from injury while Wakeham is fresh off his win in the MUN Run 5k last weekend.
The UNB Invitational is the final tune-up for the Sea~Hawks before they compete in the AUS Championship hosted by St. FX on October 30.
