Weekly Preview Nov. 12
Road Weekend for Sea~Hawks; Volleyball Postponed
This weekend will see road action in swimming and basketball. The
swimmers are off to the University of Lethbridge for a the second
half of a dual meet against the Pronghorns. The basketball teams
travel to Halifax for a weekend series against the Dalhousie
Tigers. The women’s volleyball road trip has been postponed
due to the spread of flu-like symptoms on the team.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
The Sea~Hawk swimmers head to the University of Lethbridge this
week to compete in the second half of their home and home dual
meet. The Sea-Hawks are looking for a stronger finish than earlier
in the season when the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns beat
both the men's and women's teams at Memorial October 17th. The
event lineup will work in the Sea-Hawks favor at this meet with the
two teams dualing all 4 50m sprints, 100m events, 200m IM and 400m
freestyle. The teams will also square off in the 4x100m Medley
Relay and 4x100m Freestyle Relay.
The Sea~Hawks men's team will be led by second year David Forbes
who has just missed his CIS Championship time by .2 sec in the 50m
freestyle already this year. Forbes will swim all of the sprint
freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events at the meet. Senior Tim
Rusted will swim in all the freestyle events and the individual
medley. 3rd year Brett Foster will represent the Sea~Hawks in the
butterfly and individual medley events, while third year Jon
Furlong will race in the freestyle events.
Rookies Adam Harvey of Mount Pearl, Richard Hibbs of CBS and Ryan
Allen of Saint John will round out the men's team with Harvey
racing backstroke and freestyle sprints and both Hibbs and Allen
racing the breaststroke events.
Sophomore Kelsie Rogers will lead the Sea-Hawks women's team.
Rogers looks to qualify for the CIS Championships in the freestyle
and butterfly events.
Kelsey Alexander, also in her second year, will be racing the
freestyle and butterfly events. Dayna Hogan will race the 400m
freestyle, individual medley and backstroke events. Erin Daly will
round out the strong group of second year swimmers racing in the
breaststroke events. Monica MacGillivray, the veteran of the young
Sea-Hawks team racing in her 3rd year will compete in the
backstroke and individual medley events.
Coach Brad Hutton feels the format is favorable for Memorial. He
said, “Our sprinters will be able to swim more of their best
events under this format and it should make for a close battle
between the teams.”
Women’s Volleyball
This weekend’s Memorial at Acadia women’s volleyball
matches have been postponed. The matches originally scheduled for
Nov. 14-15 have been re-scheduled for November 28th at 7:00pm and
November 29th at 11:00am. The matches were postponed due to concern
due to the spread of flu-like symptoms among the athletes.
Women’s Basketball
The Sea~Hawks will look to keep their winning streak alive when
they travel to Halifax to take on the Dalhousie Tigers in a two
game weekend series at Dalplex. Memorial opened their AUS season
last weekend at home with two big wins over the Acadia Axewomen
moving them into 9th place in the CIS national coach’s
rankings. The Sea~Hawks will look to veterans Grace Fishbein,
Brittany Dalton, and Erin Mullaley to play well again against a
Dalhousie Tigers team that will be desperate for their first win of
the season. The Tigers will be without 2008/09 AUS First Team
All-Star Jenna Kaye who is taking the year off, but have added
rookie talent Anna von Maltzahn from Halifax. With a roster that
includes seven rookies, and seven veterans, the Tigers are not a
team that should be taken lightly. Expect both teams to step on the
court with something to prove as Memorial will look to avenge last
year’s AUS semifinal loss at the hands of the Tigers. The
Sea~Hawks will take the court Saturday night in Halifax at 6pm,
with the rematch scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1pm. Both games
are available through webcast at www.ssncanada.ca/games
Men’s Basketball
After opening last weekend at home, Memorial’s men’s
basketball team will hit the road and travel to Halifax looking for
their first win of the season against a CIS 5th ranked Dalhousie
Tigers team. The defending AUS Champion Tigers will be tough
competition for a Sea~Hawks team that is coming off a heartbreaking
loss to Acadia on Sunday. The Sea~Hawks will need big games from
their big men Ante Samodol and Steve Earles who both played well in
the season openers. In the backcourt Memorial will look to fourth
year Manny Wilby, and rookie Mike Helsby to come up big if they
want to pick up a win against the Tigers. Dalhousie will be led by
2008-09 Second Team AUS All-Star Simon Farine along with a group of
veterans from last year’s AUS Championship team. The
Sea~Hawks will take flight against the Tigers on Saturday evening
at 8pm, and again on Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Both games are
available through webcast at www.ssncanada.ca/games
