Memorial hosts Saint Mary's this weekend

(Nov. 6, 2013) The Memorial women’s basketball team will host the Saint Mary’s Huskies, the number one ranked team in the country, in the opening weekend of the AUS season at the Field House. Game times will be 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.

Kelia PondDoug Partridge’s Memorial lineup has been revamped with several new faces stepping in to take on prominent roles. Coach Partridge says that Kelia Pond (pictured on upper right) and Megan Robinson (pictured on lower right) will provide veteran leadership.

He said, “Both Megan and Kelia will need to make good decisions handling the ball. Our team will make use of their three-point shooting to stretch the floor and minimize their size disadvantages.”

Partridge expects the Sea-Hawks the run the floor.

Megan RobinsonHe said, “We want to play up tempo basketball, but doing so while not letting Colley run amok with be a priority.”

AUS MVP and senior national team member Justine Colley leads Saint Mary’s.

The Huskies also welcome former Sea-Hawks guard Emily Jameson to the lineup this season. Jameson competed for Memorial for four seasons before heading to Saint Mary’s to complete her graduate degree.

The Sea-Hawks will be operating with a short bench due to injuries, as rookie Brooklyn Wright is out with a knee injury and Sydney Ezekiel, a rookie from St. John’s, has been limited in practice with a broken nose.

Partridge feels opening against the Huskies presents an opportunity.

He said, “This weekend gives us a vision for the rest of the season on what we need to improve to be AUS contenders come March.”
