Volleyball home openers this weekend

Sea-Hawks host Moncton in women's volleyball 

(Oct. 30, 2013) The Memorial women’s volleyball team will host Moncton this weekend in their 2013-14 AUS home opener at the Field House on Saturday and Sunday.

 

Memorial is coming off a trip to Fredericton where they went winless in the first interlock tournament against the teams of Quebec.

 

Sophomore Jill Snow, from Bishop’s Falls, NL, was an important part of the Memorial attack in the opening weekend. The Sea-Hawks lineup has also been bolstered by the addition of Kirsten Sorensen, a fourth year setter, who transferred to Memorial this season after playing collegiately in Alberta.

 

Krista HoganAngela Peddle, Sam March, Krista Hogan and Lauren Miller will also be key members of a balanced Memorial lineup.

 

Moncton went 1-3 at the first interlock tournament. Senior left side Joline Richard was the focal point of their attack with over 150 attacks in their four games.

 

The Sea-Hawks and Aigles Bleues last met in a thrilling five set AUS quarterfinal at the Field House that Memorial won 3-2.

 

With the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association’s Volleyfest occurring in St. John’s during the weekend a large home crowd is expected.

 

 

Men’s Volleyball open against DAL at home

The Memorial men’s volleyball team will compete in their 2013-14 home opener this weekend as they host the Dalhousie Tigers at the Field House.

 

Josh EnnisMemorial is coming off a winless trip at the interlock tournament in Halifax.

 

The team features a number of new faces vying for a larger role in head coach Luke Harris’ lineup. Key returning athletes include senior middle Nathan Tilley, Josh Ennis (pictured on right), Nick Hann, and Kendal Schmidt. Newcomers who have seen action early in the season include Sam Burt, setter Blake Power, Liam Power and Tyler Rowsell.

 

Coach Harris will not hesitate to put anyone on his 18-man roster into the lineup this season.

 

Dalhousie comes into this weekend rolling after going 3-0 at the interlock tournament.

 

Outside hitter Kristen O’Brien has led Dalhousie’s attack so far on the season with four kills per set.

 

Rookie Tiger Nathan Baker is from Clarenville, N.L. The Sea-Hawks lineup also features three players, Josh Ennis, Brandon Randell and Blake Power, from Clarenville.
