Volleyball at the Field House this weekend
(Jan. 22, 2014) The Sea-Hawks volleyball teams will play host to UNB this weekend at the Field House on Saturday 6pm (women) and 8pm (men), and Sunday 11am (women) and 1pm (men). It will be the final home games of the season for the men’s volleyball team. Senior middle Nathan Tilley will play his final games as a Sea-Hawk and will be recognized prior to Saturday night’s match.
The Memorial women’s volleyball team (3-9) will be at home this weekend hosting the UNB Varsity Reds (4-6) in a weekend matchup that will likely impact the final AUS women’s volleyball standings.
Memorial is currently tied with Moncton for fifth in the AUS. The Sea-Hawks come into the weekend losers of four in a row. The four losses were to Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie, the top two teams in the conference. The Sea-Hawks have been very competitive and have a balanced attack that will make them dangerous at the AUS Championship.
Last weekend it was second year outside hitter Jill Snow who stepped up her play to lead Memorial against the Huskies. UNB is led by senior outside hitter Rebecca Glancy who is tops in the league in points and service aces per set. The Varsity Reds have played only one game since the Christmas break, defeating Moncton 3-2 in Fredericton.
After Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s the AUS standings are log jammed with four teams only two points apart between third and sixth place in the league. A pair of wins for either team this weekend will put them in solid position for the playoffs.
Game times will be 6pm Saturday and 11am Sunday.
The Sea-Hawks (0-15) will play host to the UNB Varsity Reds (8-5) this weekend at the Field House in their final games of the season. It will be the final home games in the varsity career of senior middle Nathan Tilley.
The Sea-Hawks will be looking to improve their competitiveness and build some momentum for next season this weekend. Tilley, a 6’7 middle from St. John’s, will finish his final season leading the league in hitting percentage and currently sits in the top five in the AUS in block assists.
UNB’s lineup features fourth year Brett Ledrew. Ledrew is a native of Clarenville and is third in the AUS in solo blocks. Their lineup also features dynamic outside hitter Julio Fernandez who is among the league leaders in several offensive categories.
Memorial will present Tilley with a gift prior to Saturday night’s game to thank him for his contribution to the athletic program over the past five years. Game times are 8pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday at the Field House.
