Sea-Hawks Volleyball Homeopeners this Weekend

The men's and women's volleyball teams will host Dalhousie for their home openers this weekend at the Field House.

Women's Volleyball

The Sea-Hawks have been training hard through the offseason and have only seen one weekend of AUS action so far so they are looking forward to compete against the team to beat in the conference, the Dalhousie Tigers this weekend at the Field House.

Memorial comes into the weekend with 2-0 record after defeating UNB twice in Fredericton. The Tigers are currently the eighth ranked team in the CIS and are first in the AUS with a 4-2 record. Both of their losses came against teams from the Quebec conference (RSEQ).

Sam MarchFor Memorial Sam March continues to adjust to the setter position for Head Coach Bill Thistle. The Sea-Hawk's two middles, Angela Peddle and Chantel Jones, are starting to connect with March and are expected to continue to deliver a strong attack even against the big middles for Dalhousie. Jones and Peddle are amongst the league leaders in kill percentage and have been for the past couple of years.

Fourth year transfer from Ottawa Laura Carmanico is showing good leadership for Memorial and outstanding play both on offense and defense.

Head Coach Bill Thistle says "The key for us to win this weekend will be to serve well to keep their big attackers from optimal hitting positions and to pass well ourselves. Dalhousie has a great team, ranked CIS #7, and is very well coached. If we pass well then our offense will keep Dal off balance and score with a high efficiency. We expect two great matches this weekend."

Game time is 6pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday at the Field House. Prior to Saturday's game there will be a moment of dedication to Erin Bursey. After the match there will be a cheque presentation on behalf of organizers of a fundraiser for the Erin Bursey Memorial Leadership Award who raised over $38,000 for the cause at the event.

Men's Volleyball

The new look Memorial men's volleyball team will have host the Dalhousie Tigers in their home opener this weekend.

The Memorial men's volleyball team (0-5) has been training hard in hopes of finding success this weekend against the Dalhousie Tigers (2-3).

The Tigers are always a well-coached team as Dan Ota is one of the most highly regarded bench bosses in the country. However this weekend Memorial coach Luke Harris is hoping that his team can find a way to upset the Tigers at the Field House.

Coach Harris said, "We are healthy and will be ready this weekend for Dalhousie. They are always a tough team to compete against but we think we can compete with them. I have a lot of respect for Dan Ota and his team however we are expecting to really give them a game this weekend."

Brad PitcherHarris will be looking to his seniors, Drew Stephens and Brad Pitcher, to come up with key plays against the Tigers. Third year Darryl Prowse and rookie Nick Hann are also players that have looked good in practice and could come up with important contributions if Memorial is to beat the Tigers.

The Sea-Hawks will take on the Tigers are 8pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday. On Saturday night the Sea-Hawks will host their second annual Teddy Toss. Fans are asked to bring a teddy bear or a cash donation to help support the VOCM Happy Tree.
