Volleyball home weekend at the Field House
The men's and women's volleyball teams play host to a pair of AUS opponents over the weekend, the UNB Varsity Reds and Saint Mary's Huskies.
Fresh off of their sweep of the Cape Bretons Capers over the weekend the Sea-Hawks (5-9) begin the home stretch to the AUS Championship they will be hosting in just over two weeks. They will be competing in a key two game series against the Saint Mary's Huskies (7-7) this weekend at the Field House.
Saint Mary's, the defending AUS champions, have had a good year so far after losing a number of senior players that propelled them to the top of the league last year. The performance of senior right side Ariel Smith who leads the league with 4.16 kills per set has been the key to their success this season.
Memorial leads the league with 2.73 blocks per set, due to the wall of Angela Peddle and Chantel Jones at the net. Peddle and Jones rank one and four in the league in that category. This weekend will also feature the setter tandem of Gill Ricketts and Hayley Brenmer. They have split setting duties over the last number of games and combined for 90 assists against Cape Breton over both wins.
The Sea-Hawks have shown an ability to attack from all over the court throughout the season. Not only will Jones and Peddle be constant threats at the net, hitters Laura Carmanico and Lauren Miller will also be poised to swing for kills, piling up 16 and 24 respectively over CBU.
Game times are 6pm Saturday and 12pm Sunday

The Sea-Hawks (1-12) will host the UNB Varsity Reds (8-7) this weekend in a two game series which will be the last home games of the season for the men. These will also be the final home games for senior athletes Brad Pitcher and Drew Stephens. Saturday afternoon will be Senior Day and their time and dedication to the Sea-Hawks will be recognized.
Friday's game will be Memorial's first action against an AUS division opponent since their home opener back in November. UNB and Memorial last met three months ago when the Reds took both games against the visiting Sea-Hawks.
Outside hitter Drew Stephens looks to continue his excellent senior season. Stephens is first in AUS both kills per set with 4.00 and points per set with 4.5. Brad Pitcher is also having a great senior year and is one of the most well rounded setters in the league, with 7.47 assists per game the Stephens-Pitcher combo will need to be in top flight to win against the Reds.
UNB will attack a lot through outside hitter Julio Fernandez. Hernandez, a third year player out of Venezuela, has been touted as one of the most athletic players across all AUS men's sports.
His coach describes him as one of the "dynamic left sides" in AUS that "has been able to help [UNB] in crunch situations."
Game times are 8pm Saturday and 2pm Sunday.
