Sea-Hawks volleyball teams at UNB this weekend
The Memorial volleyball teams will compete in a doubleheader series against the UNB Varsity Reds this weekend. The games will be the women's first of the regular season as they begin their road to the 2013 Subway AUS Championship in February. The men are coming off their opening weekend against the teams of the Quebec conference (RSEQ) and will see their first action against AUS competition.
The Memorial women begin their road to the AUS championships against the UNB Varsity Reds at the Currie Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
The Sea-Hawks finished last season 7-10 while UNB finished with a record of 1-16.
Memorial and UNB competed three times last season with Memorial sweeping the season series. The teams also met this preseason at the Scotiabank Invitational at Dalhousie where the Sea-Hawks defeated the Varsity Reds 3-1.
The Sea-Hawks will be relying on their senior core to provide the leadership this season. Sam March and Chantel Jones are entering their fifth years of eligibility. Fourth year Angela Peddle will join the seniors in providing a solid foundation for the team.
March will see some time at setter this weekend to provide some support for Gill Ricketts and Hayley Bremner. March normally plays on the leftside, which is the team's deepest position with Krista Hogan, Jill Snow and Tiffany Cooper all seeing time there.
UNB (1-0) have matched their win total from last season already having won a 3-2 match against Cape Breton in their home opener on October 27th.
Game times are 6pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday (Atlantic Time). Webcast is available at the UNB Athletics website
The Memorial men's volleyball team will travel to UNB to compete against the Varsity Reds this weekend. The matches will be the first regular season AUS competition after last weekend's first interlock tournament against the Quebec conference (QSEF).
Memorial (0-3) has their sights set on improving this season in the three-team AUS league. Head Coach Luke Harris feels the team is in a position to see significant improvement over last season.
Harris said, "This is the most talented and focused team we have had at Memorial since I have been the head coach. We are elevating our practices to a winning level. After a disappointing weekend in Montreal, we took the time to find our areas of weakness and have been working hard to fix them. This season we should see some improvement."
Harris is expecting the seniors Brad Pitcher and Drew Stephens to carry the load. Fourth year Nathan Tilley will also be counted on to make a significant contribution this year.
Last season UNB swept the season series against Memorial 4-0. UNB will rely on 2011 AUS League MVP Julio Fernandez to lead their attack after finishing last season 11-6. Clarenville native Brett Ledrew will also be in the UNB lineup. Ledrew is entering his third season with the Varsity Reds.
Game times are 8pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday at the Currie Centre. Webcast is available through the UNB Athletics website
