Sea-Hawks swimmers open season at Dalhousie
(Nov. 14, 2013) The Memorial University swim teams will see their first interuniversity action of the season this weekend at Dalhousie’s AUS Invitational meet in Halifax. The Sea-Hawks, under the guidance of first year head coach Aaron Dahl, will send four women and nine men to the compete in the meet. The team will be aiming for a top three finish this weekend.
Travelling for Memorial are Dayna Hogan, Jenny Stark, Rebecca Dyer, Lesley-Marie Lahey, Peter Gregory, David Haines, Leo Froude, Ryan Adams, Nicholas Sparkes, Ryan George, Brandon McKay, Samuel Leawood, and Gavin Dyke.
Coach Dahl feels this weekend will be a good test for the team.
“Dalhousie, being the home team, and McGill, an out of conference team, will make it difficult to compete for a team win,” said Dahl, “but we feel like we can place a strong 3rd overall in the meet behind these two teams.”
Dahl feels the team is stacking up well to compete in a variety of events.
He said, “On the women's side, Dayna Hogan and Becca Dyer will bring strong performances to the women's sprint freestyle events with Lesley-Marie Lahey expected to be a factor in the women’s distance freestyle.”
According to Dahl on the strength’s of the Memorial men’s team will be depth.
“The depth in both free and medley relays should see us in the top eight in both,” said Dahl, “Look for David Haines to be a factor in the backstroke events, Gavin Dyke to be competitive in the mid-distance and distance free events and newcomers Sam Leawood and Ryan George to make some waves in the sprint events.”
The meet will take place throughout Saturday and Sunday at the Dalplex.
