Soccer teams finish home season this weekend
This weekend the Sea-Hawks soccer teams will play their final home games of the season as they host St. FX in a doubleheader weekend series at King George the Vth. On Saturday there will be a pregame tailgate party starting at noon with BBQ and live entertainment by The Rolling Kings. On Sunday seniors Chris Pope and Jeff Slaney will play their final home games as Sea-Hawks. They will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
The Sea-Hawks (3-4-2), currently in the thick of the AUS women's soccer playoff race, will play host to St. FX, who are currently in last place in the conference with a record of 1-6-2, in a weekend double header series at King George the Vth field.
Memorial are in a three way tie for fifth place in the AUS with Moncton and Saint Mary's, with the Sea-Hawks having a game in hand. With only four games left in the season two wins this weekend would help to secure a playoff position (the top six teams earn a playoff berth in the AUS). The 2012 Subway AUS women's soccer Championship will take place November 2-4 at Cape Breton University in Sydney.
At halftime on Saturday the Memorial University residence mascots will converge on King George the Vth for the Out Move Sammy competition. The winning residence house, club or society will be awarded a $1000 prize at halftime of the women's soccer game on Saturday. The contest is a mascot dance competition against Sammy the Sea-Hawk.
Memorial's fifth year forward Jenna Munden will play her final varsity home game on Sunday. Munden, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, played the first three years of her university eligibility at Mount Allison before joining Memorial to complete her graduate studies.
Games are Saturday at 1pm following the Tailgate Party and Sunday at 11am.
The Memorial men's soccer team (0-8-1) will host St. FX (2-5-2) in a weekend doubleheader series that will feature two teams that have struggled in 2012.
The Sea-Hawks will look to secure their first win of the season in their final home stand of the season.
Sunday's matchup will be the final varsity home games for senior defenders Chris Pope and Jeff Slaney. Prior to the men's game on Sunday there will be a presentation to the seniors to thank them for the contribution they have made to the Memorial University soccer program.
