Key weekend series at UNB for soccer teams
It will be a critical weekend series for the soccer teams this weekend at UNB as the teams play a doubleheader series in Fredericton on Saturday and Sunday.
The Memorial women's soccer team (2-4-1) will have their most important series of the season this weekend as they travel to compete against UNB (1-2-4). The Varsity Reds have yet to win on home turf. With both teams fighting for a playoff position, a pair of wins on either side could be the turning point in the season.
The Sea-Hawks will need to make good on their scoring opportunities to be competitive. Look for a full team effort up front to put pressure on the UNB defense. Rookie keeper Hannah Noseworthy has been effective for Memorial in goal this season. The team has gotten steady play from a veteran defense including Maria Oliver and Lauren Windsor.
A player to watch for is #16 Samantha Lagacy who leads the Varsity Reds in goals for the season with three.
Last season Memorial tied UNB in the first game of the weekend at King George the Vth 1-1. The second game ended in the Sea-Hawks favour with a 1-0 decision.
The Sea-Hawks men's soccer team (0-6-1) will be looking to find their first win of the season this weekend in Fredericton as they play a weekend series against the Varsity Reds (3-3-1).
Memorial will be looking to Steven Delong and Jake Warren up front to break through the UNB defense. Seniors Chris Pope and Jeff Slaney will continue to anchor a backline that is the last line of defense in front of keeper David Hickey.
UNB is in fifth place in the AUS, with only one of their wins being at home. They have managed eight goals for and nine goals against.
The player to watch for from UNB is Benjamin Law who currently leads UNB in scoring with two goals. Law was named an AUS first team all-star in 2011 at the defender position.
