Men's volleyball team head to UNB this weekend

The Memorial men’s volleyball team will begin a long stretch of road games with a trip to UNB to take on the Varsity Reds this weekend. Game times are 8 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday.

UNB are the defending AUS Champions and have the majority of their roster returning this season. They are led by fifth year and 2013 CIS first team All-Canadian outside hitter Julio Fernandez.

Kendal SchmidtFourth year Memorial left side Kendal Schmidt (pictured on right), a native of Red Deer, Alberta, knows that the Sea-Hawks face a challenge against UNB.

“UNB is a big, strong, offensively hungry team so polishing our defensive and blocking systems has been a priority in practice,” he said, “Offensively our focus is to be efficient rather than looking for the big kill. Playing smart will put UNB in more positions to make errors and give us chances to win points.”

Senior middle Nathan Tilley has been the focal point of the Sea-Hawks attack. Tilley has also been an effective blocker.

Memorial has used a balanced attack early in the season as coach Luke Harris give the players an opportunity to carve out larger roles.

The games will be available on webcast at www.austv.ca.
