Sea-Hawks to host Varsity Reds this weekend
The Memorial men's and women's basketball teams will play host to the UNB Varsity Reds in a weekend series at the Field House.
The Memorial women's basketball team (1-5) will be looking to take advantage of the home court as they attempt to defeat the visiting UNB Varsity Reds (0-4) this weekend in St. John's.
Memorial swept UNB last season with two wins in Fredericton.
Senior forward Grace Fishbein has been Memorial's steadiest player early this season. Fishbein is leading Memorial with 15.2 points per game.
The Sea-Hawks have been without senior post Ally Forsey since she suffered an injury in their first game of the season. Rookie Sandra Amoah has used her athleticism to lead the team in rebounding in Forsey's absence with 5.8 per game. Emily Jameson has also been active on the glass from the guard position with 4.8 per game.
UNB's Claire Colborne is currently fourth in the league with 18.8 points per game. Colborne is a dynamic shooter who is automatic from the free throw line. However, she also leads the league in turnovers and is susceptible to pressure defense.
The weekend series is critical for Memorial as they look to work towards attaining a playoff position in the competitive AUS.
Game times are 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday at the Field House.
The Memorial men's team basketball team (0-6) will play host to the UNB Varsity Reds (1-3) this weekend at the Field House.
The Memorial men's team will be looking to finish out the first half of the season with a good effort against an improving Varsity Reds team. Last season UNB beat Memorial twice in Fredericton with both games having a differential of only two points each.
Head coach Peter Benoite will be looking for a strong effort from his team this weekend. Third year forward Ryan Wood currently leads the team in scoring this season with 11.7 points per game. Forward Caleb Gould is second on the team with 9.7 rebounds.
A couple of key statistics for Memorial this weekend will be turnovers and free throw attempts. Coach Benoite feels if they can limit their turnovers and attack on offense that they will be in a good position.
UNB's leading scorer is Will McFee. McFee is a threat from three-point land and can be a streaky shooter for the Varsity Reds.
UNB's second year post Aaron O'Brien, a native of Pasadena, has worked his way into Coach Brent Baker's starting lineup this season. O'Brien will play his first games in his home province this weekend with several family members and friends making the trip across the island to show their support.
Game times are 8 p.m. on Saturday night at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
