Sea-Hawks basketball teams on the road against StFX
(Jan. 23, 2014) The Sea-Hawks basketball teams are off to Antigonish this weekend for a pair of games against the StFX.
The Sea-Hawks (5-5) are on the road this weekend playing at St. Francis Xavier against the St. FX X-Women (4-7) in a pair of AUS women’s basketball games Saturday and Sunday.
Memorial swept StFX at the Field House in November but the X-Women have been playing well recently and are coming off a convincing win over Dalhousie. Prior to that the X-Women lost a tight overtime game in Cape Breton. The X-Women have two scorers who are in the top five in the AUS in scoring. Forward Lia St. Pierre is leading the league in rebounds and assists while averaging 16.7 points per game. Guard Vanessa Pickard is StFX’s best deep threat and is averaging 16.3 points per game.
The Sea-Hawks have improved their offence of late with Megan Robinson and Kelia Pond stepping up their play last weekend in a pair of wins over UNB. Pond, Robinson and Sandra Amoah are Memorial’s leading scorers. Amoah leads the team in rebounding.
Game times are Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 11am and can be viewed online at www.austv.ca
The Memorial men’s basketball team (1-9) have improved their competitiveness this season with a win at home last weekend and are hoping to continue to find success while on the road this weekend against the StFX X-Men (7-4).
Memorial was led by 6’9 post Vasilije Curcic last weekend but coach Peter Benoite got an improved contribution from his bench. Daniel Foo made an impact in his minutes and Kieran Hawksley stepped in to provide some key offense as the Sea-Hawks upset the Varsity Reds. The Sea-Hawks have been in every game this season and in order to continue to compete for wins the starting five must compete while the bench must be ready to step in and provide serviceable relief.
StFX are winners of two in a row and are undefeated on their home court this season. Guard Will Donkoh leads the X-Men with 15.8 points per game.
Game times are Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1pm and will be webcast live on www.AUStv.ca
