Women’s Soccer

The Sea-Hawks women’s soccer team is coming off a 2012 season that saw them just miss a playoff berth. The Walt Mavin coached team will aim to continue to improve in 2013 with a roster that features eleven players who have competed for Memorial in the past and an insurgence of talent from the Canada Games program.

The team has had little time to practice together, an annual challenge Coach Mavin is familiar with during the first week of classes.

MUN SoccerHe said, “It takes time to grow as a team and this is our first game together. We are looking forward to getting out on the pitch Saturday and competing against Saint Mary’s. The Huskies are a tough team with talented players who are well coached. It should be an entertaining couple of games.”

One area Coach Mavin expects to see improvement in this year is team scoring.

He said, “We had some trouble scoring goals last year. We expect to find the back of the net a more often this year. It should be an exciting team to watch.”

The women will open their season Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. In recent seasons Saturday home games were at 1 p.m. so fans should note that the time change on Saturdays this season with games 3 p.m. (women) and 5:15 p.m. (men).

Tickets are available at the KGV gate. Season passes will also be available for purchase this weekend at the gate for $25 with all proceeds going directly to the Memorial soccer program.

Among the many new faces in the lineup this season will be Ben Collingwood (Challenge Cup rookie of the year) and Canada Games athletes Jordi Slaney, Alex Pretty and Dawson Cole. Several other rookies will look to carve out a role as the team establishes the lineup in the early going of the season.

Head coach Scott Betts is optimistic that the team will improve his season.

He said, “We will have a lot of rookies on the roster but also a few veteran guys who will be our leaders. A number of the new players have shown some promise thus far, but training and playing are two completely different environments.”

Betts expects the team to work hard and play a relentless style of game.

He said, “We should see our guys battle for every ball and show their passion on the field. The tryout process has been very quick and intense, and our style of play should be similar.

The men will open their AUS season Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and Sunday at 1:15 p.m. In recent seasons men’s Saturday home games were at 3:15 p.m. so fans should note that the time change on Saturdays this season with 5:15 p.m. (men) start time.
