Sea-Hawks go 3-1 at Scotiabank Invitational

Promising start to preseason for Sea-Hawks

Sept. 29, 2013 (Halifax, N.S.) The Memorial women’s volleyball team had a good start to their preseason with a 3-1 record at this weekend’s Scotiabank Invitational hosted by Dalhousie. The Sea-Hawks lost their opening match to Saint Mary’s before reeling off three straight wins against Windsor, Cape Breton and Acadia.


Jill Snow (photo by Chris Hammond)In the tournament opener Saint Mary’s defeated Memorial in three sets. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, and 25-18. Jill Snow (pictured on right) had eight kills to lead Memorial in the loss.


In the early game on Saturday the Sea-Hawks outlasted Windsor 3-2. Set scores were 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, and 17-15. Lauren Miller and Jill Snow each had 10 kills and 4 block assists in the win while Angela Peddle had 5 kills and 6 blocks. Miller was the player of the match for Memorial.


In the evening game Saturday Memorial defeated Cape Breton 3-2 in another five-setter. Set scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, and 15-11. Player of the game Jill Snow had 11 kills while Krista Hogan added 8.


The Sea-Hawks finished their weekend with a 3-1 win over Acadia. Set scores were 25-15, 26-24, 21-25, and 25-12. Newcomer Kirsten Sorensen was the player of the game in the win. Snow again had a team-high of 11 kills.


Sorensen was named a tournament all-star in her first action as a Sea-Hawk.


Memorial coach Bill Thistle was very happy with the team’s performance on the weekend.


He said, “Preseason is an opportunity to determine who can play, where they can play and to build game sharpness and establish chemistry. I really like the way we grew as a team each match. I was also pleased with our mental toughness and desire to compete.”
