Volleyball standings final - AUS Championship draw announced

The Sea~Hawks (5-11) finished their regular season with a bit of an oddity this weekend - with a pair of cancellations. Acadia were unable to travel to St. John's to compete in the weekend matches. The St. FX and Cape Breton game scheduled for Sunday was also postponed.

MUN volleyballWith the Subway AUS Women's Volleyball Championship less than a week away at the Field House it was decided by the coaches, universities and the AUS to not reschedule the games.

The current standings, without the postponed games, were considered final. The three remaining matches that have been removed from the schedule were postponed this weekend due to the storm that affected Atlantic Canada.

All six participating teams have already qualified for the 2013 Subway AUS women's volleyball championship, which will be hosted February 15-17, in St. John's, Nfld., with the championship awards banquet scheduled for Thursday evening.

"This was not an easy decision, but after considering a number of options, we felt that ultimately the safety of our student-athletes is our top priority," said Phil Currie, executive director of Atlantic University Sport. "The travelling conditions for the affected teams trying to complete their schedule have not improved. With our championship weekend scheduled to begin Thursday evening in St. John's, we feel this is the right thing to do for the safety of student-athletes, their academic commitments and also allow the host organizing committee at Memorial sufficient time to complete their preparations."

As a result the final regular season standings have been determined and the draw for the championship tournament has been decided.
