Wrestlers have big medal haul at UNB Open

The Memorial wrestling team had a number of medal performances at the UNB Open this Saturday in Fredericton.


Women's Wrestling


Carla ChaytorThe Sea-Hawks women wrestled their way to four medals at the UNB Open, led by a gold medal performance from second year Carla Chaytor in the 72 kg weight class. Chaytor wrestled smart, controlled matches, scoring points just before the clock expired in both wins.


Jenna Brake took home silver in the 51kg weight class. The rookie won her first match on a pin before losing by points in the weight class final.


Julie Quirke wrestled her way to a silver medal in the 55kg weight class while Breanne Coady took home bronze in 67kg and Noelle Laite finished fifth in 59kg.


Men's Wrestling

Tyson DrakeThe Memorial men's wrestling team took home six medals at Saturday's UNB Open. Tyson Drake claimed gold in the 57kg division. Drake took a decision over a Concordia wrestler who forfeited during the match to injury before defeating a UNB wrestler with a pin.


Eamon Morrissey came back in the 90kg weight class to claim a silver medal. Morrissey was down by points but pinned his opponent to secure the win.


Dennis Sutton also claimed a silver medal in the 76kg class. Sutton lost to 2011  CIS gold medalist from UNB in the final but did manage to score points.


Robbie Jewer (72kg), Matthew Patey (82kg) and Steve Adams (68kg) all earned bronzes in their weight classes.


Robert Hermanto placed fifth in the 130kg weight class.
