Sea-Hawks Weekend Summary Nov. 7 2010

An opening night win against Cape Breton in front of a sold out crowd in women’s basketball action was the highlight of the varsity weekend. The women went on to split their series with the Capers. The men looked much improved from last season, but lost to the defending champion Capers in both games of the weekend series. The women’s volleyball team was in Fredericton to take on a talented UNB team. The Varsity Reds took both matches. On Saturday it was a tight five setter, and on Sunday UNB took the match in three sets.

Women’s Basketball

Saturday Nov. 6 Memorial 80 CBU 64 (boxscore)

The Memorial Sea~Hawks women’s basketball team opened their season with an entertaining 80-64 win over their rival Cape Breton Capers in front of a sold out crowd at the Field House. The Sea~Hawks used an early surge to propel them to an 80-64 win over the defending AUS champion Capers.

 

Grace Fishbein was the HITS FM Player of the Game for the winners with a game-high 22 points. Brittany Dalton had a great game with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

 

Jahlica Kirnon led CBU with 18 points.

 

Halftime score was CBU 39 MUN 38.

 

The Sea~Hawks dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Capers 26-14 in the final frame to secure the win.

 

Memorial assistant coach Nathan Agnew filled in for head coach Doug Partridge on Saturday night, as Partridge was forced to sit out the game after picking up two technicals in the team’s final preseason contest.

 

Dalton, from Harbour Main NL, was pleased with the team’s effort. She said, “It was an amazing crowd tonight. We had a great effort and finished strong.”

 

Sunday Nov. 7 CBU 64 Memorial 56 (boxscore)

On Sunday the CBU Capers and the Memorial Sea~Hawks played another close contest, but this time the Capers came out on top, with a 64-56 win.

 

Cape Breton used a balanced attack in the win. Caper post Denisha Haywood was a force with 12 points, 17 rebounds and 7 blocks. Nicole Works added 11 points and five assists in the win.

 

Grace Fishbein led Memorial with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Brittany Dalton had 8 points and a team-high 14 rebounds while Jennifer Parsons added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

 

The Sea~Hawks bench struggled in the game as Doug Partridge looked for someone to step in off the bench to give a solid effort.

 

Both teams struggled in the fourth with Cape Breton taking the quarter 8-7.

 

Upcoming Action

The Sea~Hawks will be off to UNB for a two game weekend set starting next Saturday at 6pm and finishing up Sunday at 1pm.

 

Men’s Basketball

Saturday Nov. 6 CBU 111 Memorial 88 (boxscore)

It was a run-and-gun basketball game at the Field House on Saturday night as the men’s basketball team opened their season with a 111-88 loss to the defending champion Capers.

 

Despite losing, the Sea-Hawks did look much improved over last season, giving the Capers some challenging matchups on the perimeter. The Sea-Hawks stayed right with the Capers until midway through the third quarter.

 

However, Cape Breton is the most talented team in the league, with several weapons that can hurt teams quickly. Six Capers were in double figures in the win. Tremaine Fraser was the HITS FM Player of the Game with 20 points while teammate, and 2009-10 CIS Defensive Player of the Year, Phil Nkrumah added 20.

 

The Sea~Hawks were led by Jason Shepherd with 25 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Robbie Habib also had a great shooting night with 23 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds. Habib was effective at getting to the foul line, earning 9 trips to the charity stripe. Will Bradbury added 15 points in his first game with Memorial.

 

The halftime score was 51-45 in favour of Cape Breton.

 

Sunday Nov. 7 CBU 85 Memorial 71 (boxscore)

On Sunday in the second game of the weekend series the Sea~Hawks once again gave a strong effort, leading at the half, before Cape Breton gradually built a double-digit lead in the second half before winning 85-71.

 

Memorial’s Mark Woodland, a fourth year guard, had a great shooting day, making good on 6 three-pointers, on his way to a game-high 28 points. Woodland was the HITS FM Player of the Game in the loss.

 

Jason Shepherd also played well for Memorial with 18 points.

 

CBU were led by Paris Carter, who had 22 points and 6 assists.

 

The halftime score was 36-35 in favour of Memorial. A Ryan Brockerville steal led to a Shepherd jumper that gave Memorial their first lead of the game heading into the break.

 

CBU’s player of the game was Julien Smith.

 

Upcoming Action

The Sea~Hawks will travel to Fredericton for a weekend set against the Varsity Reds starting Saturday night at 8pm and finishing up Sunday at 3pm. If the Sea~Hawks can duplicate the effort they gave against the Capers then good results should be on the horizon.

 

Women's Volleyball

Saturday, Nov. 6 UNB 3 Memorial 2 (boxscore)

The UNB Varsity Reds and the Memorial Sea-Hawks played a back and forth five set marathon to open their weekend series in Fredericton, with the home team coming out with the win in the end. Set scores were 18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 22-25, and 15-11.

 

Memorial continued to use a balanced attack with Sasha Wilkins and Erin Bursey each leading with 13 kills. Setter Beth Forsey had 43 assists. Nicole Jolliffe and Bursey each had 15 digs to lead Memorial in that department. Chantal Jones was the player of the game for Memorial.

 

The Varsity Reds were led by fifth year Jill Blanchard with 21 kills and 10 digs. The player of the game for the winners was the setter, Amanda Bakker, who had 30 assists and 10 digs.

 

In the fourth set when Memorial went on a 12-0 run to give them a 20-9 lead. UNB regrouped and went on a 9-0 run of their own cutting the lead to 20-18. The Sea~Hawks would hold on to win the set and force a fifth and deciding set.

   

Sunday, Nov. 7 UNB 3 Memorial 0 (boxscore)

On Sunday Memorial looked to regroup after the draining five set loss the previous night. However, UNB managed to hold their home court winning in three competitive sets by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-22.

 

UNB’s player of the game was Rebecca Glancy, who had 11 kills and 4 blocks. Blanchard also continued her strong play with 11 kills and 7 digs.

 

For Memorial Sam March was the player of the game with 5 kills and 4 digs. Bursey once again led the way with 9 kills and 13 digs while Wilkins added 8 kills and 10 digs. Chantal Jones added 8 kills of her own for Memorial.

   

Upcoming Action

The Sea~Hawks will not return to the home court until January 15 when they host the X-Women. The team continues their road schedule in November with trips to Moncton next weekend before heading to Sherbrooke for the first interlock.
