Molson Weekend Summary Oct. 25
Breen and Sea~Hawks sweep UNB to highlight weekend
It was an important weekend for the Memorial soccer teams with only two weeks remaining in the regular season. The women responded with a weekend sweep of UNB that puts them at 4-7 heading their final home weekend. The men’s slim playoff hopes are fading as they went 0-1-1 in their two games series. The women’s basketball team travelled to BC to play some of the top teams in Canada West. The team played a tight game against UVIC on Sunday but failed to pick up a win on the weekend. The cross country teams took part in the MUN Run 5k, a fundraiser for Sea~Hawks Cross Country and Allied Health Services. Sean Hulburt finished first for the men. Victoria Ralph and Allison Grant tied for top spot for the women.
Cross Country Running
The Sea~Hawks cross country teams participated in the first annual
MUN Run 5k race on Saturday morning on the campus of Memorial
University. The race, a fundraiser for Allied Health Services and
Sea~Hawks cross country saw 115 people race on a cold, windy
morning. It was red and white singlets that would cross the line
first in both the male and female categories.
On the men’s side Sea~Hawk Sean Hulburt came across in an
impressive 16:31. Moments later former Sea~Hawk Mike King took
second at 16:41. The rest of the top five were Jared Walsh,
Peter Bazeley, and Tyler Cole.
On the women’s side it was two Sea~Hawks who would come
across the line in stride. Victoria Ralph
and Allison
Grant both clocked times of 20:37. Teammate Laura Lawes was
only a second off the pace in third, while Melanie Benson
came in fourth only seconds behind. Katie Little
rounded out the top five.
Coach Art Meaney was pleased with the race. He said, “It was
great to see the support from the community for the race. We
enjoyed having an opportunity to compete at home and want to thank
everyone for coming out.”
Women’s Soccer
The Sea~Hawks went to UNB this weekend with high hopes of getting
the ship moving back in the right direction heading into final
stretch of the regular season.
The women’s team found their winning form against UNB taking
both games of the weekend series. On Saturday the team looked sharp
in a 2-0 victory. Senior Leslie Pope opened
the scoring in the 37th minute. Fellow senior Laura Breen
increased the lead to two in the 78th minute. Rookie keeper
Keira
Eavis had the shutout for the ‘Hawks, the third of her
young career.
On Sunday, the Memorial offense kicked their game into another
gear, putting up four goals on the hometown Varsity Reds on their
way to the victory. The final score was 4-2. Breen, the three-time
All-Canadian notched two more goals giving her three on the
weekend, and four on the season. Pope also found the back of the
net for the second time on the weekend. Samantha Hansford
also scored for Memorial.
The two wins on the weekend put the Sea~Hawks at 4-7 on the season,
good enough for seventh place in the conference. The team will host
St. FX next weekend at Smallwood Drive Soccer Complex in Mount
Pearl before hosting the 2009 Subway AUS Women’s Soccer
Championship November 6-8.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team are seeing their slim hope at making
the AUS playoffs fade after going 0-1-1 in a weekend series against
UNB.
On Saturday in a well played match the Sea~Hawks battled hard
against the Varsity Reds, who are undefeated at home this season.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw. Goal scorers were Chris Pope for
Memorial and Shea Nordheim for UNB. Pope’s goal was his
second on the season. The loss drops the Sea~Hawks record to 1-7-3
while UNB improve to 5-2-4.
On Sunday the Sea~Hawks could not break through the UNB defense.
The UNB offense took advantage of their opportunities scoring two
goals, which would be enough for the victory. Final score was 2-0
for UNB.
The Sea~Hawks will close out their season with a home series
against St. FX next weekend at Smallwood Drive Soccer Complex. Game
times are Saturday 3:15 p.m. and Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team, fresh off a tournament win at
the Naismith Classic in Waterloo travelled across the country to
take on Simon Fraser, UBC, and UVIC in British Columbia.
After a long travel day the Sea~Hawks took on perennial CIS
championship contender Simon Fraser on Friday. Memorial, led by
Brittany
Dalton hung with SFU in the early going, trailing by only six
after the first quarter. The Clan, led by senior national team
member Laurelle Wiegl gained some distance in the second quarter.
They hit seven threes in the first half to extend the lead to 18 at
the half. The second half was all SFU. The ‘Hawks were
dominated on the glass by the big SFU front line, with the Clan
outrebounding the ‘Hawks 62-26 in the game. SFU showed why
they are the best team in the country routing Memorial 99-46. Wiegl
led SFU with 17 points. Dalton netted 14 to lead Memorial.
On Saturday Memorial made another stop in Vancouver taking on UBC
in their home gym. UBC would gain control in the game early on
their way to an 80-58 victory. UBC’s Candace Morisset had a
good showing in with 11 points, six assists, and five steals. Devan
Lisson notched 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and had a team-high
seven assists. No Memorial player reached double digits in
scoring.
The team ended the weekend with a game against UVIC Vikes. The game
was back and forth in the early going with the Vikes holding an
eight point lead after the first quarter. The Sea~Hawks would
battle back in the second quarter with Dalton and rookie Jennifer Parsons
sparking a 22-3 second quarter run that would put the Sea~Hawks up
seven with a minute to play in the half. The Vikes would take the
momentum back tying the game with a Kristen Hughes three with one
tick on the clock heading into the half.
Memorial would build the lead back up to seven with under a minute
left in the third quarter on a three by rookie Lauren Hawkins.
Another Vikes three would close the Sea~Hawk lead to four heading
into the fourth.
In the fourth Memorial kept the lead until there was a minute and a
half left on the clock when UVIC tied the game on a jumper. A UVIC
free throw would give them a one point lead when a Grace Fishbein
layup would put Memorial up one. UVIC’s Vanessa Forstbauer
would then hit a jumper that would give UVIC the win, with a free
throw making the final score 77-75.
Dalton and Hawkins led the way for the ‘Hawks in the loss
with 14 points apiece. Parsons had 12 points. Dalton added 5 steals
but turned the ball over 11 times.
The Sea~Hawks now gear up for their AUS season opener against
