Sea-Hawks in action in cross country and soccer

Sea~Hawks varsity cross country and soccer teams were in action this weekend. The cross country teams ran well in the second annual MUN Run 5k on Saturday with Erica Pritchett and Matt Wakeham staking a claim to this year’s title. The soccer teams endured a grueling three game, three-day road trip of New Brunswick with the women’s team losing all three games and the men dropping two, but picking up a draw on Sunday at Mount Allison.

Cross Country

Over 50 participants were involved in this year’s MUN Run 5k in what was to be an excellent day for running as the weather cooperating with only high winds being a slight issue. The Sea~Hawks cross country teams posted fantastic times. The women’s winner was fifth year runner Erica Pritchett who posted a time of 18:46 followed by Victoria Ralph (20:08), and Jessica Coffey (20:17).
The men’s finish was down to the wire as the trio of Matthew Wakeham, Kassu Gebresellasie, and Shawn Miller rounded the final corner of the Field House at the same time. In the end Wakeham just had enough gas left to sprint to the win in a time of 17:40. Gabresellasie and Miller’s times were 17:42 and 17:47 respectively.

The cross country teams will travel to New Brunswick next weekend for its next competition, the UNB Invitational. Women will start at 10am followed shortly after by the men at 10:45.

Women’s Soccer

Friday Moncton 3 Memorial 1
It was Moncton that opened the scoreboard off getting one in the Sea~Hawks net in the 30th minute. However, the women’s side was quick to response answering right back with a goal by fifth year player Samantha Hansford five minutes later. The game was all tied up at half 1-1.

In the second half Alex White-Dzuro had a great breakaway in the 85th minute, but was denied a goal by a great save from the Moncton Goalkeeper Danika Jobin. In the 90th minute a collapse in defense led to a Moncton goal. Another goal was added to Moncton’s tally in injury time. Final score Moncton 3- Sea~Hawks 1.

Coach Mavin was very pleased with the Sea~Hawks effort, particularly in the first half as the women’s side was able to control ball possession and break down Moncton’s back defense. Ashley Dawe was Memorial’s player of the game.

Saturday UNB 3 Memorial 0
The second match to the women’s roadtrip in New Brunswick ended with the UNB Varsity Reds scoring three goals to start off their two game weekend with a win. The Memorial women’s side had a combined five shots on goal in the match, Alex White- Dzuro led the way with two.

Goal scorers for UNB were Leaandra Upton and Heather Amberly, who scored two. Final score UNB 3- Sea~Hawks 0. Memorial’s Dawe was once again her team’s player of the game while Sam Legacy was the player of the game for UNB.

Sunday Mount Allison 3 Memorial 0
The final game to the women’s weekend was capped off by another clean sheet by Mt. Allison’s goal keeper Elissa McCarron, who went into the weekend with a .970 save percentage. Mt. A currently leads the AUS with five clean sheets on the season. Final score Mt. A 3- Sea~Hawks 0.

Upcoming Action
The Sea~Hawks currently sit at 0-6-1 and will have a weekend away from AUS competition as several players compete in national competition. The team will be looking to right the ship as they host Saint Mary’s at King George the Vth field on Oct. 16 and 17. Start times are 1pm and 11am respectively. The Huskies are also currently struggling with a record of 1-4-3.

Men’s Soccer

Friday Moncton 4 Memorial 0
The weary travelled Sea~Hawks faced a fresh Moncton squad to start off the weekend. In the end, Moncton was victorious as the home side was able to outplay the visitors. End score Moncton 4- Sea~Hawks 0.

Saturday UNB 2 Memorial 0
Galen Smith of UNB was able to start the Varsity Reds off early in the fourth minute, as UNB was pressing hard and managed to squeak one by Sea~Hawk keeper Luke Olmstead. In the 11th minute Steven DeLong was denied an excellent scoring chance. In the final minutes of the second half UNB’s Shea Nordheim added to their total, making 2-0 at the half.

In the waning minutes of the second half, the Sea~Hawks were able to put forth a string of chances and good offensive pressure. This was highlighted with a shot on goal by Adam Kilbride and a corner kick by Scott Woodfine. However Memorial was unable to put one behind the net. End score UNB 2- Sea~Hawks 0. Players of the game were Memorial’s Chris Pope and UNB’s Nordheim.

Sunday Memorial 2 Mt. Allison 2
The men’s side was able to pick up some important points in their weekend finale at Mount Allison on Sunday. The match ended in an draw, as both sides were able to chip in two goals over the course of the game.

At the end of the weekend the men’s side still finds itself on the inside track of the AUS playoffs, as the side currently sits tied in the 4th position with UNB with a record of 3-3-1. End score Sea~Hawks 2- Mt. A 2. Goal scorers were Chris Pope and Brock Fraser. Rookie David Hickey was in goal for Memorial.

Upcoming Action
The Sea~Hawks will take a break from AUS competition this week as several players compete in national competitions. They next play on October 16 and 17 as they look to remain undefeated at home when the play the Saint Mary’s Huskies at King George Vth. Game times are Saturday at 3:15pm and Sunday at 1:15pm.
