Swimming

The Memorial Sea~Hawks hosted the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns this past weekend, the first varsity level meet in Newfoundland in twenty years. The meet was run in a Dual Meet format with three Sea~Hawks racing three Pronghorns in each heat. Scoring in individual events is 5 points for a 1st place finish, 3 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd, for relays the winning team gets 7 points.

On the men's side the Sea~Hawks were led by sophomore David Forbes who finished with first place finishes in the 50m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle and was narrowly out-touched in the 50m Butterfly. He also led the 4x50m Freestyle Relay team to a first place finish. Forbes was close to qualifying for CIS Championships in his sprint events, just missing the cut by .22 in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 24.11. 5th year Tim Rusted also had a victory in the 800m Freestyle, gearing up for his best event, the 1500m Freestyle with a convincing win. Rookie Adam Harvey also had a strong meet with a fast swim on the 4x50m Freestyle relay, a 2nd place finish in the 200m Backstroke and a 3rd place in 50m Backstroke.

The men's team were beat by the University of Lethbridge 66-38, strong swimming early in the meet in the 4x50m Freestyle relay and the 50m events kept the Sea~Hawks in the race. However, Lethbridge was too strong in the 200m events, pulling away and beat the Sea~Hawks in the 4x50m Medley Relay.

On the women's side the Sea~Hawks were leading 32-29 after the first seven events which included a win in the 4x50m Freestyle relay, all four 50m sprint events, 200m Individual Medley and the 800m Freestyle. In the final five events the Sea~Hawks struggled to finish their 200m races with the same speed as the Pronghorns and finished behind in points 43-61 at the end of the meet.

The 2nd year swimmers for the Sea~Hawks led the way at the Dual Meet with Dayna Hogan, Kelsey Alexander and Kelsie Rogers having fine performances. Hogan swam to two 1st place finishes in the 800m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle. Alexander finished 1st in the 50m Freestyle and 2nd in the 50m Butterfly. Rogers was 2nd in both the 50m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly. 3rd year Jane Brodie also fought for a 2nd place finish in the 800m Freestyle. Rogers, Alexander, Hogan and Brodie also started the meet with a big win in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay.

The meet was a great early season experience for the Sea~Hawks, the team will now re-focus on training before traveling to the University of Lethbridge November 11-15th for another Dual Meet where the several Sea~Hawks could meet the CIS standard. According to Head Coach Brad Hutton the weekend meet was a success. He said, "High quality racing early in the season is invaluable and the ability to bring a varsity team out to Memorial and run a proper varsity Dual Meet is a huge advantage for our swimmers and our fans. The team is swimming well for this early in the season and should expect big things for the 2009-2010 season."

Women’s Soccer

It was another disappointing weekend for the women’s Sea~Hawks soccer team losing both games in a weekend series with the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.

Saturday UPEI 2 Memorial 1
On Saturday, the women kicked off the weekend with an early goal by Malorie Harris, which gave Sea~Hawks a 1-0 lead. Down by a goal, the Panthers stepped up their offense and were able to carry the play and create numerous scoring chances in the first half. Returning to the field in the second half with the heavy wind at their back, the Panthers took full advantage when AUS leading scorer Tessa Roche netted her 7th goal of the season just over a leaping Keira Eavis. UPEI did not let up pressuring the Sea~Hawks defense, eventually scoring their second goal of the game just two minutes later. Fighting the wind, the Sea~Hawks had a few late chances but were unable to beat a strong Panthers’ defense in the dying minutes of a 2-1 defeat.

Sunday UPEI 2 Memorial 1
Sunday was a new day and the Sea~Hawks went looking for a big win to start turning the season around. The game would be played in Sergeant Ned Nugent Park in Conception Bay South due to poor conditions after Saturday’s game at Smallwood Drive. Once again Memorial got on the board early with Heather Williams scoring her third goal of the season 21 minutes into the game. Memorial continued to apply pressure but was unable to capitalize with Laura Breen having the best opportunity to put the home side up 1-0. Late in the half, Panthers’ striker Tessa Roche found the back of the net, tying the game. Rookie keeper Keira Eavis was able to keep the Sea~Hawks alive making multiple big saves, until the 81st minute when Roche was able to slip one by making it 2-1 for UPEI. As time counted down, the Sea~Hawks applied pressure forcing the Panthers’ defenders to come up with two huge blocks. The final was 2-1 UPEI.

The Sea~Hawks are now 2-6 on the season, ninth in the AUS. UPEI improve to 6-1.

Next weekend the women will travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick to take on the Varsity Reds before closing out the regular season at home against the X-Women.

Men’s Soccer

Memorial’s men’s soccer team did not help out their bid for the playoffs this weekend, losing twice to the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.

Saturday UPEI 2 Memorial 1
In Saturday’s match the Sea~Hawks came out flat and dug themselves a hole early allowing Panthers’ striker Jimmie Mayaleh to place one past keeper Gerald Zengeya. The goal seemed to rally Memorial as they stepped up their offensive pressure, which finally paid off when rookie Scott Woodfine scored on a great individual effort, tying the game at one. Ten minutes into the half, it was AUS leading scorer Mayaleh who once again found the back of the net, giving UPEI a 2-1 lead. Fighting against the wind, the Sea~Hawks created chances late, but it was not enough, as they were defeated by a final score of 2-1.

Sunday UPEI 2 Memorial 0
With a change of location to Sgt. Ned Nugent Field in CBS, the Sea~Hawks were hoping for a different outcome. With keeper Tyler Putt back in goal for the Sea~Hawks, he was forced to come up with big saves early in the game as the Panthers made the most of two consecutive corner kicks. With both teams playing a very tight physical game it was not until the 62nd minute that UPEI was able to capitalize on a Sea~Hawks defensive error. With Memorial pushing hard for the tying goal, Panthers’ midfielder Dan McAleer scored his second goal of the game late in regulation. The Sea~Hawks would eventually run out of time, losing 2-0 to UPEI.

The Sea~Hawks are now 1-6-2 on the season. UPEI are now in top spot in the AUS with a 7-2 record.

The men will be on the road next weekend where they will look to pick up two wins against UNB, before returning home to host the X-Men in a Halloween weekend series.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team kept their winning streak alive this weekend when they travelled to Waterloo, Ontario to take part in the 42nd annual Naismith Classic.

The women kicked things off Friday afternoon with a win over Concordia University 63-50. Sophomore forward Ally Forsey led the ‘Hawks with 12 points and 5 rebounds, followed by Grace Fishbein with 10 points. Saturday afternoon the women defeated the home team University of Waterloo Warriors by a score of 55-49. Forsey played well in the second game, recording a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and rookie Jennifer Parsons added 10 points of her own.

On Sunday the Sea~Hawks played the University of Fraser Valley in the final game of the tournament, winning the game to finish the weekend 3-0. Final score of the game was not yet available.

The women will only have a short stay back in St. John’s before they head west to British Columbia next weekend to take on three western Canadian universities in what will be a solid test to see where Memorial stands on the national scene.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team travelled to Antigonish, Nova Scotia this weekend to take part in the St. FX Invitational tournament. The ‘Hawks were in tough on Friday night when they took on the AUS perennial favourite, and hometown St. Francis Xavier X-Men. Down only five at the half, the Sea~Hawks worked hard eventually taking the lead 55-53, while only shooting 35% from the field, the Sea~Hawks could not hold on as they went on to lose by a score of 78-72. The ‘Hawks were led by Mike Helsby who scored 20, Jason Shepherd added 16, and Steve Earles who put 13 points on the board.

In the consolation final on Saturday, the Sea~Hawks faced the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds. UNB’s Colton Wilson was the difference as he scored a game high 25 points for the Reds in the UNB 77-71 victory. Steve Earles scored 14 points for Memorial, with rookie Mike Helsby adding 10 of his own, and earning a spot on the tournament all-star team.

On Sunday, the men were in Halifax where they took on the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics. The Sea~Hawks were able to finish the weekend off with a win, defeating MSVU 72-61 with Steve Earles and Justin Grainger both having good showings for Memorial.
