Sea~Hawks Weekend Summary for January 21-22.

The Sea~Hawks endured a rough weekend in which they went winless on the court and almost missed a swim meet in Prince Edward Island. However, some Sea~Hawks did gain some individual success this weekend.

Women's Basketball

The Sea-Hawks women's basketball team returned to the comforts of home court, hoping to put behind their CBU losses. A talented, agressive Acadia team
arrived eager to steal some valuable points on the road. The Axewomen came out strong in the first quarter and the Sea-Hawks came out a step slow, allowing the Axewomen to go on a 10-0 run midway through the period to give them a 26-12 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Sea-Hawks made some early mistakes, enabling Kristy Moore to get to the net on her favored right hand side, while Abby Duinker had some easy opportunities inside. The second quarter, saw the Sea-Hawks settle in and make some key opportunities on offense, but defensive lapses only narrowed the gap at half-time to a 41-31 Acadia lead. The
Sea-Hawks who've put themselves back into games quickly using the 3pt line,
struggled to go 6-20 from deep. Ally Forsey picked up a couple of quick fouls
and was limited in her contribution inside in the 2nd half. The Sea-Hawks
struggled to control the Axewomen again in the 3rd period and the 4th quarter
played out with Acadia outscoring the Sea-Hawks by 1. However, the Sea-Hawks
had put themselves in too large a hole to recover and the final score was
Acadia 85 Memorial 67. Abby Duinker finished the game with 16pts, 9 rebounds
and 2 blocks. Lindsey Harris also played well for the Axewomen with 17 points
and 7 assists. Megan Robinson was the Sea-Hawks best all around performer,
scoring 11 pts, 3 assists and 3 steals.

The Sea-Hawks knew Sunday would require a better effort and that Acadia would
not be an easy foe. The Sea-Hawks brought a much better game right from the
start and didn't allow Acadia to set the pace early. Offensively, the
Sea-Hawks had much better ball distribution and were getting early offense from
multiple sources. The Sea-Hawks were also defending the key match ups much more effective than Saturday night, which contained the Axewomen from getting an early lead. The first quarter score gave the Sea-Hawks a 17-14 advantage. The Sea-Hawks came out strong again in the 2nd quarter and were able to hit some open shots, created as the Axewomen were forced to double down on Ally Forsey who was making some great moves in the post. Acadia made a run in the 2nd, with Abby Duinker scoring on consecutive possessions to bring the Axewomen within 1 with just under 3 minutes to play in the half. The Axewomen went on a 6-0 run to close the half and take a 35-29 lead. The Sea-Hawks continued to play well in the 3rd and pulled within 2 points, with some timely shots from 3pt land. In the final quarter, Abby Duinker went 2 for 2 from the 3 point line early in the 4th to give the Axewomen a 6 point lead, but the Sea-Hawks continued to rally back. Samantha Kavanagh and Ally Forsey played well on both ends of the floor and with just under 3 minutes to go, the Sea-Hawks held a 1pt lead. Both teams were held off the board, until the Axewomen scored with 13 seconds to go. The Sea-Hawks called a timeout and drew up a play that could win the game. Samantha Kavanagh ended up open on the 3 point line, but her shot hit the rim and bounced out, forcing the Sea-Hawks to foul to stop the clock. Acadia went up by 3 after going to the foul line and time expired on the Sea-Hawks. Abby Duinker led for Acadia with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Sammy Kavanagh made a solid contribution for the Sea-Hawks with 15 points and 5 rebounds, while Ally Forsey fought hard with 23 points, 8 rebounds and went 9 for 10 from the foul line. The Sea-Hawks remain in 3rd place in AUS standings and will head to UPEI to face the Panthers next weekend.

Men's Basketball

The Sea-Hawks Men's basketball team would face a .500 Acadia squad, who were eager to collect some key points as the Axemen try to go on a playoff run. The Axemen shot well early going 50% from the floor, compared to the Sea-Hawks who struggled shooting just 27% from the floor. The Axemen were able to control the Sea-Hawks on the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Sea-Hawks 42-26. At half-time, the Axemen's good offensive play had provided a 46-24 lead. Jason Shepherd was the only player for the Sea-Hawks who was able to get consistent scoring opportunities and led the way for the Sea-Hawks with 21 points. The Axemen had all five starters in double digits, and through the end of 3 quarters maintained a 21 point lead. During the 3 quarter, the contact between both teams escalated and both Ryan Wood for Memorial and Sean Stoqua for Acadia were ejected from the game with disqualifying fouls. The game ended in a 84-61 win for the Axemen.

On Sunday, the Axemen again came out to an early start. The Sea-Hawks kept pace early, but were down 25-18 after the first period. Mike Helsby was able to
contribute early, getting to the net and scoring some jumpers from outside.
The Axemen got offensive contributions from a number of players and were able
to build the lead at half-time to 52-35. Again, the well rounded contribution
from the Axemen saw their starting line-up contribute more than 75 of the teams points. The Sea-Hawks were led by veteran Jason Shepherd, while Justin Alliman and Mark Woodland were able to provide support offensively, but untimely turnovers and consistent rebounding by the Axemen prevented the game from ever being close. Down 29, the Sea-Hawks made a late run early in the 4th quarter, but were unable to close the margin. Final score Acadia 92 Sea-Hawks 64. The Sea-Hawks travel to UPEI next weekend to face the Panthers.

Sea~Hawks Swim Team

The Sea~Hawks Swim team travelled to Charlottetown, PEI looking to add to their
CIS Championship Eligible contingent as they prep for the AUS Championships in
early February. Following a one day travel delay the results were mixed. The
women struggled with illness and injury. While the Men'team continued to have
strong leadership by David Forbes and Men's team Co-captain Richard Hibbs who shattered the Sea~Hawks previous record in the 200m breast stroke by three seconds. Hibbs was very confident heading into the meet and coulod hardly contain his excitement to compete in the week heading into the meet.Currently only Leah Tomblin has qualified for the CIS Champiosnhip meet in Montreal in late February. However, Coach Brad Hutton believe that will change.
