Saturday: Vanden Elzen free throws seal win for Sea-Hawks

Feb. 1, 2014 (St. John’s N.L.) Marika Vanden Elzen’s free throws with two second left in the fourth quarter sealed a 61-59 victory for the Memorial Sea-Hawks over the Cape Breton Capers in AUS women’s basketball on Saturday night. Alison Keough tied the game with nine seconds remaining for the Capers. On the ensuing possession Vanden Elzen was fouled on a shot attempt off an offensive rebound before making the decisive free throws.


Kelia Pond led Memorial with 19 points in the win on 8-11 shooting from the floor. Sandra Amoah added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Sea-Hawks. Vanden Elzen was the player of the game for Memorial.


The Capers came back from a 14-point halftime deficit. There were led by Keough’s 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Sunday: Sea-Hawks earn overtime win over Capers

Feb. 2, 2014 (St. John’s N.L.) Sydney Stewart’s driving layup, and subsequent foul shot, with ten seconds to go in overtime propelled Memorial to a 67-65 victory over the visiting Cape Breton Capers on Sunday. The game was pushed to overtime after Memorial point guard Megan Robinson tied the game on a three-pointer with twenty-seven seconds remaining in regulation.


Stewart finished with a season-high 17 points off the bench to lead Memorial. Sandra Amoah added 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win.


Alison Keough led the Capers with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the loss while Tanira McClurkin had 15 points and 5 steals. Three Capers fouled out in the game.


The win improved the Sea-Hawks to 7-7 while the Capers fell to 7-8 with the loss. Memorial will travel to Dalhousie for a pair of four-point games next weekend.
