Volleyball teams compete in exhibition tournaments

Women's Volleyball

The Sea-Hawks women's volleyball competed in the Martlet Invitational hosted by McGill this weekend, finishing with a 1-3 record after defeating the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday in the second game of the weekend between the two teams.


Friday Waterloo 3 Memorial 1

The Sea-Hawks opened their tournament with a 3-1 loss on Friday morning to the Waterloo Warriors. Memorial opened strong, taking the first set convincingly 25-15 before Waterloo turned the tides to take three straight to claim the match. Set scores were 15-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-13.


Friday McGill 3 Memorial 0

The host McGill Martlets handed Memorial their second loss of the day in the evening draw at the Martlet Invitational on Friday. McGill took the win in straight sets but, despite the score, the match was very competitive with tight set scores of 29-27, 25-22, and 25-20. The Sea-Hawks were unable to overcome untimely errors during the match that swung the momentum to the home team.


Saturday Saint Mary's 3 Memorial 2

The Saint Mary's Huskies atoned for their straight set loss to Memorial two weeks ago in Halifax by handing the Sea-Hawks their third straight loss on Saturday. Memorial started the match very well taking the first two sets 25-22 and 25-15. The Sea-Hawks had two match points in the third set but were unable to put away the Huskies and ended up dropping the third set 30-28. SMU overcame a 20-16 deficit in the fourth to battle back for a 25-22 set victory to force a fifth and deciding set. In the final set Saint Mary's finished the match with a 15-10 victory.


Sunday Memorial 3 Waterloo 2

On Sunday the Sea-Hawks finished their weekend on the upswing, breaking their three match losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. The match was the second between the two teams on the weekend.


Memorial opened the match slowly, facing a 16-11 deficit, but bounced back to win 25-23. It was all Sea-Hawks in the second set as they won 25-15. The Warriors should their competitiveness by fighting back to take the second and third sets by identical 25-23 scores. In the fifth set the Sea-Hawks pulled together to close out the match with a convincing 15-6 win.


Head Coach Bill Thistle thought the weekend was a good learning experience for the team. He said, "We are still trying to find our identity as a team. We see flashes of intense play and it is getting better, but it is not sustained. Our new athletes are learning what it means to compete at this level. It is challenging when they are tired and have the pressures of school on them. The have to learn to compete when they are frustrated, tired or just having a bad day."


He feels the team is on the upswing. He said, "We continue to grow as a team and know we are able to beat most of the teams we compete with and have the potential to get better and better. I think we will be a very strong team come playoffs."


The Sea-Hawks will open the 2012-13 AUS regular season on November 3rd as they travel to Fredericton for a weekend series against the Varsity Reds.


Men's Volleyball

The Memorial men's volleyball team saw their first CIS exhibition action of 2012-13 this weekend as the team finished 2-2 at the Royal Military College's exhibition volleyball tournament.


Friday Memorial 3 RMC 1

The team opened the tournament against the host RMC Paladins on Friday night, earning a 3-1 victory. The Sea-Hawks took the opening two sets 25-19 and 25-18 before dropping the third in extra points, 26-28. Memorial closed out the match in the third set 25-19 to make the final 3-1.


Saturday Nipissing 3 Memorial 0

The Sea-Hawks and Nipissing Lakers competed in the early draw on Saturday with the Lakers defeating the Sea-Hawks in straight sets 3-0. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 25-18.


Saturday Windsor 3 Memorial 0

In the Saturday evening draw at the RMC Invitational the Windsor Lancers defeated Memorial by a score of 3-0. Set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-20. The Lancers lineup featured a familiar face as former Sea-Hawk Scott Hickman is a current member of the Lancers team and a close friend of many of the Memorial volleyball players.


Sunday Memorial 3 McGill 0

The Sea-Hawks finished the tournament out with a win on Sunday morning, defeating the McGill Redmen in straight sets to finish the tournament at an even 2-2. Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.


Prior to the weekend tournament the Sea-Hawks travelled to Hamilton to spend the midterm break training with the McMaster Marauders volleyball team.


Memorial will open their AUS regular season with the first Interlock tournament against the schools of the Quebec conference (QSEF) on October 26. The team's 2012-13 homeopener will be November 17 against the Dalhousie Tigers at 8 p.m. at the Field House.
