Sea~Hawks Past, Present and Future Dual in the Pool

The Sea~Hawks swimmers had their first official races of the season last Saturday, racing in a morning session against top high school prospects and hosting their first Alumni Dual Meet in the evening.

On the women's side, a trio of veterans led the way with impressive swims from fourth years Leah Tomblin, Dayna Hogan and Kelsie Rogers.

Tomblin had a strong showing in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:27.26 and in the 50m butterfly stopping the clock at 30.37s. She also was the strongest in the pool in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 100m individual medley.

Hogan's best event was a 1:02.48 in the 100m freestyle and she had a great swim in the 50m breaststroke (a new event for her) with a time of 36.97s. Rogers was impressive posting a time of 32.00s in the 50m backstroke and swam strong in her other sprint events.

The rookies on the women's side also made a great debut with Lindsey Denine from Mount Pearl swimming to a time of 5:47.33 in the 400m individual medley. She also went on to swim well in the shorter backstroke and freestyle events. Head coach Brad Hutton was also impressed by Sarah Tremblett and Victoria Tremblett of St John's, as they posted good times in the sprint freestyles.

On the Men's side veterans David Forbes, Richard Hibbs and Ryan Allen lead the way. Forbes posted a fast 100m butterfly time of 59.58s. He swam a 29.25s in the 50m backstroke, 24.46s in the 50m freestyle and 55.10s in the 100m freestyle. Third years Hibbs and Allen excelled in the breaststroke events. Hibbs raced to a 2:35.81 in the 200m breaststroke, 1:11.84 in the 100m breaststroke and
31.95s in the 50m breaststroke. Allen wasn't far behind with a 32.91s in the
50m breaststroke and 1:12.90 in the 100m breaststroke.

Coach Hutton is confident in his group of rookies. Peter Gregory of St John's, swam a 5:04.01 in the 400m individual medley and raced to a 2:16.31 in the 200m backstroke. Curtis McKay of St John's looked great in the sprints with a 25.28s in the 50m freestyle and a 27.70 in the 50m butterfly. Brandon Billard of Sackville had a strong showing, racing to a 28.10 in the 50m butterfly.

After the first official races of the season, the Sea~Hawks are showing some promise heading into 2011-2012 campaign. Brad Hutton believes the times from this past weekend may be the fastest times he has ever seen at the early point of the season. A solid core of veterans, coupled with a strong group of rookies has surprisingly improved the depth of the team. The team dynamic has been surprising competitive while remaining friendly by nature as the team is pushing one another to surpass team and individual goals.

Overall, the Alumni Meet was a tremendous success with 18 former Sea~Hawks swimmers from all generations joining the current Sea~Hawks in the pool.
