Molson Weekend Summary Oct 4

Malorie Harris

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team did not have the road success they were hoping for when they travelled to Nova Scotia for a pivotal three game road trip.

Friday DAL 1 Memorial 0
The Sea~Hawks made their first stop on Friday afternoon when they took on the Dalhousie Tigers. Looking to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, the Sea~Hawks played a tight defensive game matching a strong Tigers offense’s every move. The game was tied in injury time when Dalhousie was able to convert on a rebound to give them the victory. The game was disappointing for the team as they had a number of chances throughout the game. Rookie Sea~Hawks defender Lauren Windsor was named player of the game.

Saturday SMU 4 Memorial 2
On Saturday the Sea~Hawks moved across the city to take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The Sea~Hawks would find the back of the net early, when Malorie Harris was able to slip one past the Huskies just 15 minutes into the game. Eight minutes later, Memorial would suffer a devastating defensive breakdown allowing the Huskies to capitalize and score three goals in a five minute span. Down 3-1 at halftime, both teams would exchange goals in the second half with Harris scoring her second of the game, but it would not be enough to overtake the Huskies. Laura Breen was named player of the game for the ‘Hawks.

Sunday Memorial 4 Acadia 0
Closing out their weekend in Wolfville, the Sea~Hawks were in desperate need of a victory. The Sea~Hawks played their best soccer of the weekend and were rewarded for their efforts with a 4-0 win over the Axewomen. Malorie Harris continued on her hot streak scoring two more goals against Acadia, along with Leslie Pope and Laura Breen who each found the back of the net once. Rookie keeper Keira Eavis was able to redeem herself after the loss to the Huskies picking up her second shutout of the season.

Upcoming Action
The women will have next weekend off for Thanksgiving break with many of them taking no time off the field as they will take part in the senior national soccer championships. The Sea~Hawks will see their next action when they host the UPEI Panthers on October 17th and 18th.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team also hit the road for three games this weekend travelling to Halifax and Wolfville to take on Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s, and Acadia.

Friday DAL 6 Memorial 1
The Sea~Hawks were in tough when they kicked off their road trip Friday evening against the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax. The Tigers are currently ranked 4th in the CIS and they showed why netting six goals against the Sea~Hawks in a 6-1 loss for Memorial.

Saturday Memorial 0 SMU 0
The Sea~Hawks would play their second game of the road trip on Saturday afternoon against the Saint Mary’s Huskies. In a close match, neither team was able to find the back of the net, with the game ending in a scoreless tie. Tyler Putt was in goal for Memorial.

Sunday Acadia 4 Memorial 1
Looking for their second victory of the season, and first of the weekend Memorial travelled to Wolfville to take on the Acadia University Axemen. The first half of the game was a tight defensive match, but all of that would change when Sea~Hawks keeper Tyler Putt was given a red card and ejected from play 38 minutes into the game. Putt’s departure forced rookie defender Matthew Breen to take over the Sea~Hawks goal. After a scoreless first half of play, third year midfielder Matthew Holton put Acadia on the board scoring just three minutes into the second half. Acadia would score again 60 minutes in, and Holton would slide a second one past Breen eight minutes later. Sea~Hawks defender Chris Pope would answer with a goal at the 75 minute mark but it was too little too late for the ‘Hawks. Acadia would add another and take the 4-1 victory handing the Sea~Hawks their second loss of the weekend. Chris Pope was named the Sea~Hawks player of the game.

Upcoming Action
The men will also take Thanksgiving weekend off as a team, but many players will be in action at the senior national tournament. The team will return to the pitch on October 17th and 18th when the host the UPEI Panthers.

Men’s Basketball

The Sea~Hawks men’s basketball team made their season debut at the University Hoops Showcase on the River in Miramichi, New Brunswick this past weekend.

Saturday Memorial 94 Crandall 67
The Sea~Hawks saw their first action on Saturday night when they took on Crandall University. The Sea~Hawks played well taking a 45-32 lead into the half, but stepped things up in the second half cruising to a 94-67 victory over Crandall. Sophomore Steve Earles led the ‘Hawks scoring 15 points, with rookie Mike Helsby, and sophomore Robbie Habib each adding 13. Coach Benoite was happy with his team’s performance for their first game of the season, but was disappointed in the number of turnovers as the team struggled, committing more than 25 turnovers.

Sunday Memorial 77 St. Thomas 46
The Sea~Hawks would have a busy Sunday playing two games, the first against the St. Thomas University Tommies. Memorial would take control of the game right from the beginning not allowing a single Tommies basket in the first quarter. At the half Memorial would lead by a score of 48-10 but would start the second half of the game flat, allowing St. Thomas to close the gap. The Sea~Hawks would win with a final score of 77-46, led again by Steve Earles (15 pts) and Mike Helsby (16 pts).

Sunday Memorial 76 Holland College 68
Memorial’s final game would be against Holland College, and would be a much closer game. Playing their second game of the day, the ‘Hawks came out flat and took a while to find their legs, ending the half tied at 37. In the end, Holland College’s physical play would not be enough as Memorial took home a 76-68 victory. Rookies Mike Helsby and Ante Samodol led the Sea~Hawks in scoring, followed by Robbie Habib, and team captain Jason Shepherd.
Overall Coach Benoite was impressed with his team’s effort on the weekend and was happy to have the opportunity to get all players on the court.

Upcoming Action
The men’s team will see their next action this coming weekend when they take on the Sea~Hawks alumni as part of the Exhibition Weekend events.
