Sea-Hawks win in front of home fans

(Jan. 19, 2014) The Memorial Sea-Hawks gave the near full house at the Field House something to cheer about on Saturday night as they defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 80-76. UNB came back to win on Sunday to earn a series split.

Sea-Hawks upset Varsity Reds at the Field House (boxscore)

Jan. 18, 2014 (St. John’s NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks upset the UNB Varsity Reds 80-76 in front of a vocal home crowd in St. John’s on Saturday night. Second year post Vasilije Curcic led Memorial with 20 points, including six in the final five minutes, in the win.


Memorial coach Peter Benoite got a lift off the bench from rookies Daniel Foo and Kieran Hawksley. Foo scored 12 points in 12 minutes including a three-pointer with 8:09 left in the fourth quarter that gave Memoral a three-point lead. Hawksley added 10 points including a clutch jumper with 2:07 left to give Memorial a two point advantage.


Jake Hynes was Memorial’s player of the game. Hynes played impressive defense on AUS leading scorer Javon Masters.


Jordan Irvine led UNB with 20 points in only 14 minutes of play. Irvine hit 4-6 from three-point distance and 8-9 from the foul line. Will McFee scored 18 while Masters added 12 points for the Varsity Reds.


The win was Memorial’s first of the year.



Varsity Reds respond on Sunday with 86-69 win over Memorial (boxscore)

Vasillije CurcicJan. 19, 2014 (St. John’s NL) After being upset by Memorial on Saturday, the UNB Varsity Reds responded by beating the Sea-Hawks 86-69 in AUS men’s basketball on Sunday. The Varsity Reds were limited to eight active players due to injuries.


Javon Masters led UNB with 20 points, 6 assists and 5 steals in the win. Jordan Irvine ignited the Varsity Reds offense with 15 points, all from three-point distance, while adding 8 rebounds and 7 assists.


Vasilije Curcic had a big game for Memorial in the loss with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Curcic shot a tidy 12 -13 from the floor. Caleb Gould added 16 points and 6 rebounds for the Sea-Hawks.


UNB improved to 8-3 with the win.


Memorial now sits 1-9 on the season.


The Sea-Hawks will travel to Antigonish next weekend for a series against the StFX X-Men.
