Men's basketball team finish season
The Memorial men's basketball team lost both games to UPEI in their final home weekend to finish the season 1-19. However the team showed progress through the second half of the season and gave home fans hope that the future is bright for the roster made of predominantly first and second year players.
Friday UPEI 89 Memorial 67 (boxscore)
The UPEI Panthers used their athleticism to build a first half lead that would hold up in an 89-67 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Friday night at the Field House.
Deontay Smith led five Panthers in scoring with 20 points. Smith had 10 of his points from the free throw line. As a team the Panthers were 25-31 from the free throw line, compared to Memorial's 6-11.
Sophomore forward Caleb Gould led Memorial with 17 points and 13 rebounds while third year Theo Stanoev also had 17 points for Memorial including 4 three-pointers. Noel Moffatt had 13 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Saturday UPEI 87 Memorial 77 (boxscore)
The Memorial Sea-Hawks, led by Noel Moffatt and Vasilije Curcic, could not complete an exciting comeback, losing 87-77 to the UPEI Panthers in their final game of the AUS men's basketball season Saturday afternoon at the Field House.
The Panthers pull away early, building a 19 point halftime lead of 48-29.
In the second half Memorial came out with an inspired effort to give home fans a glimpse at the future hopes for the Sea-Hawks. Seven seconds into the third quarter a Noel Moffatt three-pointer ignited a run where Memorial would outscore the Panthers 31-22 in the quarter to cut the lead to ten heading into the fourth.
In the first minute of the fourth the Sea-Hawks would go on a 6-0 run capped off by a Moffatt jumper that cut the lead down to four to force a UPEI timeout.
Out of the timeout the Panthers would go on a 10-2 run that would end the Sea-Hawk comeback attempt.
Moffatt finished up his outstanding second half of the season with a career-high 36 points on the game. The product of Gonzaga High School shot 15-23 including 5-10 from three-point distance. Curcic, a 6'9 rookie from Serbia, had 21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists before fouling out with three minutes to play in the fourth. Moffatt and Curcic combined for 57 of Memorial's 77 points in the loss.
Deontay Smith had 23 points, 10 assists and 9 points to lead the Panthers to the victory. Senior Jermaine Duke had 10 points and 9 rebounds in his final game for UPEI.
The Panthers finish third in the AUS with a 13-7 record and will play Saint Mary's in the quarterfinals of the AUS men's basketball championship next weekend.
The Sea-Hawks finish the season 1-19 but with much-improved competitiveness in the second half of the season and plenty of experience for the young roster heading into next season.
