Sea-Hawks get first exhibition test of 2012-13

The Sea-Hawks basketball teams saw their first pre-season competition this weekend as the women's team swept a pair of games against the visiting Concordia Stingers while the men split a pair of games against a team made up of former Memorial basketball players.


Women's Basketball


Friday Memorial 69 Concordia 59

The Sea-Hawks used a complete team effort to defeat the visiting Concordia Stingers Friday evening in CIS exhibition basketball at the Field House.

Sandra AmoahAfter a close first quarter that finished with the Sea-Hawks leading by a single point, the home side pulled away to head into the half with a 21 point advantage.

Concordia cut the deficit in the third quarter to eleven, outscoring Memorial 20-10 in the quarter.

Memorial held on in the fourth, picking up their intensity to close out a ten point victory. The final score was 69-59.

Ally Forsey led Memorial in scoring with 14 points while Emily Jameson added 12. Rookie Sandra Amoah was named the 99.1 HITS FM Player of the Game in her first action in a Sea-Hawks jersey.


Saturday Memorial 72 Concordia 67

The second game of the weekend series between Memorial and Concordia was evenly contested with both teams going deep into the bench to give all players a good tune-up for the CIS basketball season.

At the end of the first quarter Memorial led by three, 15-12.

By halftime Memorial extended their slim advantage to five points.

The pace picked up in the third quarter with both teams picking up their offence. By the end of the quarter Concordia cut the Memorial lead to four.

In the fourth the Sea-Hawks did not allow the Stingers to make it a one possession game and finished with a 72-67 victory.

Kelia Pond was the top scorer for Memorial with 22 points. Ally Forsey added 18 and Kim Devison drained 16 on her way to 99.1 HITS FM Player of the Game honours.


Men's Basketball


Friday Memorial 79 Alumni 78

The new look Sea-Hawks men's basketball team played a weekend set against a team made up of former Memorial men's basketball players.

MUN basketballIn the weekend opener the alumni team took an early lead but the varsity team charged back in the second quarter to finish the half down only a pair.

The varsity team dominated the third quarter, finishing the frame with a 65-51 advantage.

The alumni team made in interesting in the fourth, cutting the lead to three in the final two minutes, but the varsity team held on to edge the veteran alumni squad 79-78.

Caleb Gould led the way with 13 points in the victory while fourth year transfer Cory Cooper has 11 points. Cooper was the 99.1 HITS FM Player of the Game.

Saturday Alumni 83 Memorial 77

The Alumni team kept bragging rights by upending the varsity team 83-77 on Saturday night to split the weekend series.

The Sea-Hawks cut into the alumni lead in the fourth, at one point closing the gap to four points after a pair of threes by Cory Cooper, but the experienced alumni squad did not relinquish the lead, finishing the game with a six point advantage.

Cooper led the varsity team with 22 points in the loss while Caleb Gould had 16. Gould was named the 99.1 HITS FM Player of the Game.
