Women's Basketball Pick Up Two Big Road Wins at UNB, Runners at CIS Champs & Men's Basketball Face T

Memorial Basketball teams headed to UNB to play their first games at the brand new Currie Center, new home of the UNB Varsity Reds. The environment proved friendly for the women's basketball team, as the Sea-Hawks picked up two big four point wins. The Men's Basketball team leave the Currie Center heartbroken with two nail biter losses, both by two points and one in OT.

The women's volleyball earned an unexpected weekend off, when high winds and heavy rain created stormy weather conditions, preventing the CBU Capers from flying out of Sydney or Halifax. Games will be rescheduled early this week.

Two Memorial cross country runners faced tough race conditions, with wind, snow and cold facing the runners at the start line of the CIS Championships. Jordan Fewer and Caroline McIlroy made their debut appearances at the CIS championships in Quebec City, but finished with much slower times than their AUS regular season races.

Women's Basketball

The Memorial Women's Basketball team headed into Fredericton to face the UNB Varsity Reds on Saturday, in the first regular season game played at the new Currie Center. With court conditions very similar to the Field House, the Sea-Hawks felt at home taking a 36-31 lead at half-time. The team shot well behind the 3 point line, going 6 for 11 in the first half. The Sea-Hawks were aggressive on the boards out-rebounding the Varsity Reds 38-26. After 3 quarters the Sea-Hawks led 54-38 and closed out the game with a final score of 80-69. Although fouling out of the game, Ally Forsey was named player of the game for the Sea-Hawks with 18 points and 8 rebounds in just 26 minutes of court time.

On Sunday, the Varsity Reds got out of the gate early and led after the 1st quarter 18-14. The Sea-Hawks shot less than 40% from the floor in the 1st half, but went 11-13 from the foul line to give them a 41-29 lead at the half. Ally Forsey had another great game for the Sea-Hawks leading with 16 points, 7 rebounds, a block and a steal in 17 minutes of court time. Kim Devison was Memorial's player of the game adding 10 points, while Grace Fishbein contributed 14 points in the win. The Sea-Hawks controlled the rest of the game, winning 82-64 and picking up a huge 8 points on the weekend.

Men's Basketball

The Men's Basketball team coming off a win over the Saint Mary's Huskies last weekend opened their first regular season road game with a fast paced first quarter and were down 26-22 after the first 10 minutes of play. The up tempo pace continued in the 2nd and the Sea-Hawks gave up a couple of easy baskets to get down 50-39 at the half. Robbie Habib led the Sea-Hawks offensively and scored a game high 38 points on 14 of 23 shooting, while adding 8 rebounds, an assist and a block in 38 minutes of play. The Sea-Hawks down 10 after three quarters rallied back in the 4th quarter, but lost by two points in what was an exciting finish. Mike Helsby had a great offensive night, scoring 28 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and adding 4 assists in a solid performance for the Sea-Hawks. Newfoundland native Aaron O'Brien did see limited court time for the Varsity Reds, playing 4 minutes in the opening contest.

On Sunday, the Sea-Hawks came out of the gate better and held a 23-20 lead after the first quarter. Held to just 12 points in the 2nd quarter, the Sea-Hawks found themselves down 3 at half. A tight second half ended tied 83-83 and both teams would see their first overtime of the regular season. Shooting well all game, the Sea-Hawks shot just 30% in the OT period and when the final buzzer sounded, UNB had won 94-92. Robbie Habib led the way for a second time offensively, scoring 27 points for the Sea-Hawks. Player of the Game Jason Shepherd added 21 points and 8 assists for the Sea-Hawks. The Sea-Hawks showed character in these two difficult road games, but fall shy of earning points on this eight point weekend. The Sea-Hawks will look to the hometown crowd to come out and support them at home against UPEI this weekend.

Cross Country

On a cold, windy, snowy day in Quebec City, the CIS Cross Country Championship races got underway. Caroline McIlroy represented Memorial in the women's 5K race earning a 36th place finish with a race time of 19:27. This time is short of her AUS Championship finish of 18:14, which would have given her a top 10 finish at the CIS Championship.

Jordan Fewer competed in the Men's 10km race and also had difficulty on the course, finishing with a time of 35:19, also off his AUS 7th place finish time of 32:57.

Both Sea-Hawks will take the experience as learning as they head into the off-season and a potential return to the CIS championship in 2012.
