Men's Volleyball 3-0 so far this Holiday Season

It was an exciting holiday break for The Memorial University Sea~Hawks. Three team faced holiday opponents with varying results. The Men's volleyball team has and will continue to be the busiest this holiday season as they hosted a short training camp with the Royal Military College Paladins that also featured three evening games in the MUN Gymnasium. In all three matches the Sea~Hawks were able to assert themselves on their opponents as the capitalized on many of the unforced errors. Both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams were able to win a game each at their respective tournaments at Ryerson University and Concordia University.

Men's Volleyball

The Men's volleyball team continues to build towards playoff contention in the AUS as they showed their mettle in a clean sweep over RMC prior to leaving for the Timber Invitational at Mount Royal University in Calgary. During the first matches between RMC and Memorial, the Sea~Hawks capitalized on a number of service errors while the front line intimidated RMC's attack into some very inefficient numbers. The Sea~Hawks won 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19).

In the second match between the two teams RMC continued to struggle giving the Sea~Hawks little to deal with as their attack just could not get it going against the Sea~Hawks frontline whose blocking game was much too distracting leading MUN to another 3-0 win (25-18, 25-16, 25-20). In the third and final match on Friday night Luke Harris coached his team to a series sweep of the Paladins with another 3-0 win (25-18, 25-17, 25-16). The three game sweep should give the shorthanded Sea~Hawks a confidence boost as they head into Calgary.

The Sea~Hawks begin play at the Timber Invitational on January 2nd at 7:30pm against the University of Alberta- Augustana Vikings. On January 3rd the men play two games at 3:30pm and 9:30pm versus the Briercrest Clippers and the Algonquin College Thunder. Their playoff schedule will be determined once the round robin finishes. The Sea~Hawks will rely heavily on their veterans and continued development of second year Kendal Schmidt who should bring a few fans as he is from nearby Red Deer, AB.

The Men's resume their AUS play at home on January 14 & 15 as they host the reigning AUS Champion UNB Varsity Reds.

Men's Basketball

The Men's basketball team travelled to Toronto to take part in Ryerson University's National Invitational Tournament (RUNIT).

Toronto 67 v. Memorial 59

Sharp-shooter Alex Hill was flawless from beyond the arc, nailing six three-pointers in as many attempts and tallying a game-high 25 points as the Toronto Varsity Blues qualified for the semi-finals of the RUNIT with a 67-59 win over the Memorial Seahawks. Mike Helsby led the Seahawks with 18 points, while Justin Alliman recorded the tournament's first double-double, tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds. After building an 11 point lead in the opening quarter, the Sea~Hawks allowed the Blues to go on a 13-1 run at the end of the second period to take a four-point lead into half-time. The two teams continued to go back and forth until later in the fourth where Toronto was able to distance themselves for the 8 point win.

Waterloo 74 v. Memorial 78

Jason Sheppard tallied a team-high 20 points, while Mike Helsby added 17 to go along with eight rebounds, and the Memorial Seahawks tallied their first victory at the RUNIT with a 78-74 triumph over the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday. Waterloo's Cam McIntyre drained seven three-pointers, while shooting over 50% from the field in a losing cause for Waterloo. The tightly-contested affair had both team tied at 67 a piece midway through the final quarter. However, a 6-0 streak by the Seahawks gave them a slight cushion, and some key free throws with just seconds left on the clock was enough to hand the Warriors their second-straight defeat. Memorial advanced to the 5th/6th placement game versus the Guelph Gryphons.

Guelph 93 v. Memorial 72

A horrendous first quarter sunk the Sea~Hawks in their final game at the RUNIT .The Gryphons shot a staggering 21/32 from the floor and added 7 of 9 shooting from beyond the arc to distance themselves early and coast to the 21 point win. Following the tough first quarter the Sea~Hawks continued to press Guelph actually outscoring them in each of the final three quarters. Jason Shepherd provided his team with 19 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes of play. Both Mike Helsby and Justin Alliman played over thirty minutes in the game.

The Men's Basketball team look to make a push for the AUS playoffs when they host Dalhousie at the Field House on January 7 at 8pm.

Women's Basketball

The Women's basketball team travelled to Montreal to compete in the Concordia Reebok Invitational where they got off to a stifling start defeating McGill 60 to 44 which set the ladies up for a shootout with the eventual tournament winners University of Alberta Pandas. The Sea~Hawks fell 76-54 to their Alberta counterparts. The Sea~Hawks were relegated to the 3rd place game versus the CIS #4 rank Carleton Ravens in a game that saw the Ravens lead from start to finish. The Ravens took the play to the Sea~Hawks and out rebounded them 44-24 and were a perfect 12 for from the Free Throw line. Sea~Hawks rookie Megan Robinson provided her team with 28 minutes of 4 for 7 shooting from the field and two of three from the beyond the arc.

The Sea~Hawks return to AUS action on Saturday, January 7th at the Field House as they host the Dalhousie Tigers at 6pm
