Teeing Off For Student Athletes
Memorial Athletics is pleased to announce that it will host its first Sea-Hawks Scholarship Golf Tournament at Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club, St. John's on June 28th, 2012. The golf tournament is being organized by athletic alumni, in conjunction with Memorial Athletics with all proceeds going to support athletic scholarships and awards for student-athletes at Memorial.
Michelle Healey, Director of Athletics is extremely happy to get this project moving and looks forward to a great first year event.
She says, "I am delighted that we have an opportunity to host a golf tournament in support of student-athlete scholarships. One of the key challenges student-athletes face is juggling the demands of school and varsity sport, while simultaneously trying to manage the costs associated with attending university. If we can work together to establish annual funding to support athletic scholarships then together we are supporting our student-athletes."
Ms. Healey noted that improved access to athletic scholarship funding will help Memorial's coaches recruit talented student-athletes. "Scholarships will help our coaches recruit the necessary talent to build competitive programs, so this project will also support our coaches in enhancing their recruiting potential", she said.
The tournament organizing committee is made up of athletic alumni across sports and eras. "We have a great core group of athletic alumni involved in the planning of this event and I look forward to sharing additional details in the next short while. Right now, we're asking anyone interested in participating to 'save the date' and get your teams organized".
Tournament participation is open to anyone interested in supporting the Sea-Hawks. We are also looking forward to welcoming our athletic alumni to this inaugural event, so we can reconnect and learn more about your experiences as a varsity athlete. Gather a group of old teammates and friends to form a team of 5 golfers or register as an individual. More details on the event will be released in February, but feel free to send along early expressions of interest for participating to contact Erin Scott escott@mun.ca or by phone 864-3479. Anyone interested in sponsorship opportunities or volunteering with the event, please contact Erin at your earliest convenience and we thank you in advance for your support!
