Sea~Hawks Get Points in Season Openers
Both men's and women's soccer teams kicked their season off on the right foot as they remain undefeated after opening day. On the women's side, Memorial walked away with a point as they managed to add a marker in the final fifteen minutes of the match as drew even with UNB finishing the game with a 1-1 draw. The men put forth a complete team performance as they controlled the tempo for the majority of the match, beating UNB 1-0.
Women's Soccer
Heather Williams came through in the clutch, scoring in the 76th minute to tie things at one apiece. First year nursing student Janine Battcock showed poise and patience, passing up on a shot and feeding Williams for the team's lone marker. The goal would prove to be enough to fend off the Varsity Reds late attack, as the game settled in a 1-1 tie.
Heather Ambery scored for the Varsity Reds at the 18 minute mark.
Men's Soccer
Steven DeLong bulged the ol' onion bag early, scoring in the 17th minute on a beauty through ball from the backline. That marker would be the lone goal of the match, as the Sea~Hawks escaped late pressure from the Varsity Reds to claim the match 1-0. It was Memorial first win over the Varsity Reds since their home opening weekend in 2005. Matthew 'Chewy' Hamlyn returning from a shoulder injury that resulted in him missing the entire 2010 season thrilled the fans with a free kick during the 87th minute as he struck the post. Chris White, Jake Warren and Ryan Yetman joined Hamlyn as Sea~Hawks who have come back to the nest for the 2011 campaign.
The women kickoff at 11am as they look to build upon a strong second half. The men will follow at 1:15pm as they will be in tough to sweep the Varsity Reds. Wear your Red Sea~Hawks gear and bring your noisemakers.
