Dr. Bill Redden named honorary chair for 2011 Subway AUS women's basketball Championship
The Memorial University division of Athletics has announced that Dr. Bill Redden has been named the Honorary Chair of the 2011 Subway Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Women’s Basketball Championship. Memorial University will host the event March 4-6 at the Field House.
“Dr. Redden has been a long-time supporter of varsity sport at Memorial and has made a contribution for over four decades as a coach, official, volunteer, camp clinician, and administrator,” said Michelle Healey, Director of Athletics at Memorial. “We are very pleased to have this opportunity to recognize Dr. Redden as he has made a positive impact on many young athletes lives.”
Dr. Redden completed a bachelor of Physical Education degree from the University of New Brunswick before completing a Master of Science in physical education and Master of Arts in student services in higher education at Springfield College. He went on to complete his doctor of philosophy at Florida State University, focusing in movement science.
Dr. Redden was a faculty member in Memorial University’s School of Physical Education and Athletics for thirty years. He was director of the school from 1994-1997. While simultaneously serving as a faculty member, he spent 12 years as a basketball head coach at Memorial. He coached the women’s program for five years and the men’s varsity program for three years while serving as an assistant for a number of seasons. He also coached the junior varsity men’s and women’s programs for two years each. Overall, including public school and developmental teams, he has coached over 45 different basketball teams over his career to date.
One of the founders of the Newfoundland Association of Basketball Officials (NABO), Redden is dedicated to the development of quality officials, and has been recognized with the Wink Wilcox Award by the Canadian Association of Basketball Officials for this contribution.
He is a member of the Sport NL Hall of Fame as an athlete and builder in the sports of basketball and tennis and is a member of both the St. John’s and Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Hall of Fame.

I feel I am sharing this honor with all those friends, colleagues, and players with whom I have worked and with the many people who have made a contribution to the development of basketball in Newfoundland and Labrador over the years,” said Dr. Redden. “It is my hope that all players, coaches, and officials will perform to their maximum potential during the Championship weekend and that the sport of basketball will be the winner.”
The 2011 Subway AUS Women’s Basketball Championship gets underway on Friday, March 4 at Memorial University’s Field House. The quarterfinals will take place 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday while the semifinals will take place on the same time on Saturday night. On Sunday the championship game will take place at 1 p.m. with the third place game tipping off at 11 a.m.
